TV ad campaign calls on PM to ban live export

TV ad campaign calls on PM to ban live export

3 June 2011 Have your say

Whilst hundreds of thousands of Australians have voiced their opposition to the cruel live export trade, Julia Gillard's only response has been a temporary suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia...

Animals Australia, with RSPCA Australia and leading community advocacy group GetUp! have launched a new TV ad calling on the Gillard Government to ban live export for good. And Animals Australia will also hit the airwaves with a
radio ad so Julia Gillard can "Hear us" and ban live export.

The public response to the Four Corners expose was so enormous that immediately after the program our joint Animals Australia/RSPCA Australia campaign website BanLiveExport.com temporarily crashed. And in just three days, over 200,000 Australians have joined a GetUp petition to the Government to stop live export.

But the Gillard Government's only response so far has been to temporary suspend the live cattle trade to Indonesia. Whilst this is a welcome step, only a complete ban on live animal exports to all countries will ensure that these images are not repeated, and also ensure that Australia sends the strongest possible message to other countries that animals, and their welfare, matters. Animals Australia will continue to campaign rigorously for millions more animals who are destined to be shipped to slaughter in countries where there are no laws to protect them from cruelty.

Julia Gillard is the one person with the ultimate power to protect Australian cattle from cruel treatment in Indonesia and the Middle East. We have to continue to remind her that the Australian public will not accept anything less than a complete ban on live animal export. The TV ads will run every day until the Prime Minister takes this only appropriate action. Please, even if you have already done so, help the animals by calling on Julia Gillard to act now.

We thank advertising agency LOUD for their creative vision and pro bono support in helping to create this TV ad.

Without the generosity of Animals Australia members and donors, investigations such as these would never have been possible. Please support our work today.

I will never forget seeing Tommy, Bill, Brian, Arthur and Dudley's dear faces awaiting such a cruel and unforgiving fate at the hands of the abattoir workers. How can our Prime Minister not be moved by this tragic event when most of Australia was. Ban live exports please now for good. Also to see the dear sheep running around lost in a ship waiting to be shipped overseas on the Ocean Shearer hasn't left my mind either. Stop this cruel, evil trade now.

Pamela Hollonds: LIVE EXPORT JUST HAS TO STOP Friday, 17 June 2011 at 1:46pm
How can we as Australians hold our heads up when this type of cruelty is going on.  If New Zealand can stop Live export surely we can do the same.  No matter how much money or how many jobs are involve it simply cannot be justified in any form.  Come on Julia show us some leadership and ban live export for ever!!

IIT SIMPLY HAS TO BE STOPPED

Thank you Lyn White and all the other dedicated Animals Australia campaigners for your ceaseless efforts to end animal cruelty. I just can't bear to watch graphic footage of animal cruelty anymore. It haunts me so deeply. Thank God for people like you who use this pain to power your convictions and to show the world the ugly truth.
Rosina SAUNDERS: BE MY VOICE Thursday, 16 June 2011 at 1:32pm
Look at the fate that's destined for me,
A one-way trip in that dreadful hold,
Oh God of animals please hear me
My future's too awful to behold.

I was born to a fate with no other choice
I try to be stoic, not cry out loud.
I need you to hear me and be my voice
My end is bloody; they like me cowed.

Please see this place of my worst fears
And see the horror inflicted on me
Please speak for me through your tears
Of shame for the cruelty inflicted on me.

It's too late for me;  I'm gone now,
In my end they did all rejoice.
My life gone, blow by bloody blow-
My brethren need your angry, human voice.

And so it starts.    The cattle will suffer cruelty if they are left waiting??   They will suffer cruelty if they are shipped south or east??    They will suffer cruelty if we have to shoot them!!   They should be so lucky to face one quick bullet instead of what awaits them overseas.      If we don't continue this trade, even the indigenous people will suffer!    Oh we're worried about them now are we?     Those people the Libs couldn't apologise to.    Now we will decide which abattoirs they go to - we will tag them.    They were tagged and we saw where they ended up.    LIES LIES LIES AND MORE LIES.     Do they think we are stupid?  No, we are just expected to keep funding this outrage with our taxes.

Hamish Townsend: Ban ALL live export NOW! Tuesday, 14 June 2011 at 2:03am
Yes Gillard has currently suspended live export to Indonesia. This however is only part of the problem. Live exports are currently being considered to other areas such as the middle east. The middle east! of all places! This is clearly a case of profit before compassion as is the case in much of the western world let alone the entire world. This matter really should not even be up for debate. To live export LIVE animals is beyond comprehension to the average human being and there fundamentally really can only be one solution. BAN ALL LIVE EXPORTS AND BAN THEM IMMEDIATELY! If the ban takes the 3 years that is currently being spoken about to come into place then how many more animals must die a cruel and agonising death just because of some red tape issue? To put it blunty stuff relations with Indonesia and poor poor farmers but really can their case be justified in the face of such gruesome footage? It cannot! There really is no debate for any intelligent and compassionate human being. Live exports are simply unacceptable!

MARK jacobson: end the slave trade Monday, 13 June 2011 at 4:05pm
They say that to be born at all is a miracle, it surely is, the countless odds that you and i overcame to even be here is nothing less than remarkable. I know i am going to cherish this life, because it may be all i will ever know. Tell me, in what universe is it ok to deny any other creature this great gift? What right do we have to take an animals life, and to make matters worse, treat them as figures on a spreadsheet.
This is a vile, disgusting trade and i do not feel like an alarmist or that i am over reacting when i liken it to other atrocities such as the slave trade, the nazi regime, the apartheid etc. Australia is not a war torn dictatorship. This is the lucky country! (unless you're an animal) We should be better than this, no economy is worth selling its soul for.
We must ban live export indefinitely. This includes all animals!

Rosina SAUNDERS: THE GATES OF HELL-AL Sunday, 12 June 2011 at 10:39am
New Zealand banned ALL LIVE EXPORTS in 2004 following the deaths of 5000 sheep on an AUSTRALIAN vessel bound for Saudi Arabia.
Since then they have been sending PROCESSED MEAT to Indonesia and the Middle East.  So, what is this we're hearing about the Indonesians not accepting meat processed on our shores and the need for the animal to be facing Mecca when it meets its end??  From what I could see, those poor, noble, trusting, humiliated and sadistically treated animals were more likely facing the Gates of Hell.  It seemed that the position of Mecca was wherever those sadists wanted it to be.
We send 500,000 live cattle to Indonesia annually so it is going to be impossible for them to make up that shortfall from anywhere else.  This puts us in a position of control.  In a position to say that we will trade with them ON OUR TERMS only.
We owe it to these animals to insist that they meet their end in a climate of respect and we need to do this for the good of our nation's soul.
If we establish abattoirs at the mustering ports we can create jobs for Australians and still allow halal supervision (if that's REALLY what they want).
Come on, Aussies.  Our fellow ANZACS across the ditch have stood up and punched well above their weight on this issue.  We can but follow their lead.

Shirley Robinson: Money..... $ $ $ $ Sunday, 12 June 2011 at 3:09am
Thank you Lyn White and Team, 4 Corners and everyone involved with this documentary.  My family and I were sickened watcing this, we wouldn't treat a family cat like these animals have been treated.
I second the thoughts of the young lady Rosina Saunders (above).
She put it so adequately - regarding the Cattle Industry turning a blind eye (covered with a $ eye-patch) - so true.  I also don't know Lyn how you mamaged to stay focused during all that was going on
you have our admiration believe me.    As I said it's all about the almighty $  !!   Thank you once again - we must stop all live animal trade - FOREVER.

Marion: Lack of rrefridgeration - but they mobiles, gold wateches and cars! Saturday, 11 June 2011 at 2:17am
The excuse is a lack of refridgeration, but the poor cannot afford to buy meat in those countries, Thus, those we saw mobile phones, cars, gold watches can simply afford to buy a fride!

Besides, those cultures living here go to athe supermarket to buy their, meat , That meat is not tortured facing Mecca! Nor are the killed Halal way.

Simply Crypoack and freeze meat. Indonesis is only three hours flight away. s

Greg Youdale: Live Export Ban Means New Jobs Friday, 10 June 2011 at 9:33pm
I hear tonight on the radio about the loss of jobs for those in the live export industry.

I'm sure it's not that difficult to sort out this situation and still keep all the jobs.

Simply refuse to send live animals to any country and build (or rebuild) the frozen meat market in Australia.

Growers still can raise animals, truckers can still truck animals, shippers can still ship meat and our abattoirs can be reopened creating new jobs.

Set Australia up as a premium frozen meat supplier to the world ... if others must have live animals then let them go elsewhere.

Australia now has a chance to make a stand to move humanity on to a higher level.

I, like most Australians, am ashamed at what has happened here and also by the fact that this has been common knowledge by our meat exporters and government for ages ... shame on you all ...

Simply process all the meat here and only sell the frozen product ...

nic wilson: thank you. Friday, 10 June 2011 at 8:01pm
i would just like to say THANKYOU to everyone that has stood up and said stop this vial treatment of our animals. THANKYOU AA, RSPCA, and Four Corners for showing the public what has been going on for years. I will pray every day that the live export trade will cease not only in Indonesia but everywhere. The only thing that saddens me more is knowing that there will still be animals sent to these places from countries who have zero animal welfare laws and that the horrific sadistic acts will contine with them.  Lets not give up on these poor souls. God bless them.X
Anne Maher: 100,000 Already There - Waiting. Friday, 10 June 2011 at 11:57am
Apparently there are l00,000 of our cattle there at the moment, waiting their turn!      I grieve for them.      We can only wrap them in a blanket of love in our thoughts and hope the end is quick.

Sam: THANKS ANIMALS AUSTRLIA Friday, 10 June 2011 at 11:00am
I have absolutely no sympathy for any farmer involved in this disgusting rade.  Half of them that have been interviewed on TV knew the abbitoirs in Indonesia were not up standard and animals were being tortured.  One of the farmers couldn't even find an intelligent answer when a TV journo said to him why didn't you want to tell anyone the abbitoirs weren't of a high standard. They have all known for years (30 YEARS INFACT) that this trade is so wrong.  Its all about money.  When you do bad to others KARMA comes around!!!
Anne Maher: MLA & Livecorp Investigation. Friday, 10 June 2011 at 9:54am
I would like to see an investigation into the funds supplied on behalf of  us, the Aust. Tax Payers, by our Govts (&  by the now disgusted Beef Producers also) to these organizations for the setting up, design of equipment,  sanction &  contribution to these atrocities.

In fact, I demand to see how my taxes have been used in this matter.    The Govt. demands to see all my records in regard to Taxation.   I demand transparency from them in this matter.   After all, they have all shown us they cannot be trusted.
ferdy: LET US FIGHT TO THE END. Thursday, 9 June 2011 at 2:44pm
Let us not rest ,all of you gentle hearted people, its not over yet. What an eye opener this has been? I'M SO GLAD PEOPLE GOT TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE "BEHIND THE SCENE" ! ,especially those who like to conveniently believe that meat just comes off the supermarket shelves!!! What horrible, untold of pain these sad and frightened animals go through JUST to please the human taste buds and for greedy economies to earn their dollars??
carla hepburn and warren young: Thank you from Bill's friends who are saved from torture! Thursday, 9 June 2011 at 1:39pm
Firstly, a very big THANK YOU to Lyn Whyte and her team for the courage experiencing firsthand, and exposing, the torture and abhorent treatment of these gentle and beautiful animals!

We can never allow this horrific export of our livestock to any country, as it has been exposed time and time again that we cannot rely upon the animal's welfare, once they leave our care!

Meat and Livestock Australia have allowed this disgusting practice to continue for twenty or so years, even though they have known about it!
Now they are crying poor

The six month ban is a start, but it now needs to be banned for ever, not just for our cattle, but all other livestock exports from Australia!!
Australia is a greater country than this; we don't build our country on blood money!

Anna: Animals are not chattels Thursday, 9 June 2011 at 3:11am
Thank you Lyn White and Animals Australia, the RSPCA, and Get Up for the incredible work you have collectively done in order to highlight this atrocity against our fellow creatures. I have not been able to watch the entire 4 Corners program because it was too upsetting, too confronting, but the imagination was capable of filling in the remaining gory details. Enough of treating cattle and sheep as commodity animals. Live export must stop today, not tomorrow, not in 3 or 4 years time. Today.
Paul Thompson: NO Live Exporting Livestock Wednesday, 8 June 2011 at 9:58pm
I am very relieved to know that the animals that we have been exporting are free from that violent murderous action. I am scarred from the cruelty that I needed to see on television about our exported animals and hurt to know that there are people out there who don`t have the intelligence to realize that they should treat those animals like they were royalty because there poor little unknown fates feed us all.I say no country receives our live stock unless they follow a very strict slaughtering procedure. Its not about cost affective it is a live animal. And also allow Australia to do routine checks and updates on their slaughtering procedures.
Thank-you
