Protesters rally behind stranded sheep

Protesters rally behind stranded sheep

21 August 2011 Have your say

The animal welfare debacle that unfolded in front of Adelaide residents has clearly revealed the terrible risks faced by animals on all live export journeys.

300 sheep died while trapped on the Al Messilah, a broken down live export ship originally bound for the Middle East. After only one day at sea, the stricken 28 year old converted car carrier, carrying 67,000 sheep was forced to return to Adelaide due to mechanical failure. After languising aboard for ten days, the sheep were finally given a reprieve and were offloaded.

In a remarkable show of commitment, Adelaide residents joined Animals Australia for five separate rallies at Port Adelaide to call for mercy on behalf of these animals, and the millions of others who suffer in the live export trade every year.

Despite a flood of public concern from across the country, the export company that owns these sheep decided to again export them to the Middle East. Sadly, this decision will see hundreds more animals suffer and die on the gruelling three week journey, before reaching their destination, where the remaining sheep will have their throats cut while fully conscious.

The presence of hundreds of dedicated protesters at the docks appears to have significantly impacted the re-loading of animals onto the MV Al Shuwaikh. For consecutive days, the live exporters appeared to be in hiding and chose to delay loading any sheep while the public eye was watching. Remarkably, this delay not only cost the live exporters considerable funds, it gave several days' grace to thousands of animals and turned a one-day protest into a three day media story. Sheep were hurried onto the ship in the cover of darkness in the lead up to our final protest, when hundreds of locals laid flowers in a tribute to the suffering of these animals and the millions who had gone before them (see photos here). The memorial was again broadcast on all television stations, sending a clear message to our politicians that caring Australians want live export banned.

Only a few days after the Al Shuwaikh left Port Adelaide, WA residents rallied for two consecutive days at Fremantle Port, as the ship docked to load more animals. Animals Australia supporters joined local member society Stop Live Exports, Melissa Parke (Labor MP) and Lynn McLaren (Greens) at the docks, with the media also in strong attendance once again.

Animals Australia extends a heartfelt thank-you to South Australians and West Australians who have travelled at very short notice from near and far to give their voice to these animals. News of these live export rallies not only reminded Australians that live export is inherently cruel — it has also added significant pressure on Government to address the cruelty of live export at a most critical time. Soon Labor will discuss a motion that could end the worst abuses of the trade.

Tragically the deaths on board the Al Messilah are not unusual. On board live export ships, animals are confined in crowded pens and provided only an unnatural pellet diet — which many animals refuse to eat, leading to 'inanition' (starvation). The stresses of shipping and refusal to eat pellets also increases salmonella outbreaks which is the cause of most deaths on these huge ships. Other sheep suffer from eye infections. 2.6 million sheep have perished on live export vessels since the trade began. Last year alone, nearly 27,000 died before reaching their destination. The live export industry now has an 'acceptable death rate' for every shipment.

The routine suffering and death on board every live export vessel again points to the callousness of an industry that is prepared to export live animals regardless of how cruelly they will be treated.

Risto Siljanoski: BAD NEWS FOR ALL OF US! Tuesday, 11 October 2011 at 7:28pm
Animals Australia e-mail
Dear Risto,

I had hoped to update you today with the news that Labor had taken advantage of a critical opportunity to end the horrors of fully conscious slaughter in the live export trade.

But instead, despite pleas from no less than 60,000 Australians, and appeals from some caring Labor MPs, today's caucus motion was weakened from a position of 'mandating' stunning, to 'encouraging' stunning %u2014 meaning that Australian animals will continue to have their throats cut while fully conscious in foreign abattoirs.

WILL YOU VOTE FOR LABOR OR LIBERALS AGAIN?  I WILL NOT!
Do you see what's happening in America?
People can not stand injustice anymore!
Live export is terrible injustice!
What are we doing about it??? Not much!
IS EVIL SO STRONG THAT WE CAN NOT WIN OR
ARE WE ALL GUTLESS  WEAKLINGS ???

The Socialist Party supports the banning of live exports but adds that this on its own will not solve the problems in the industry. As long as food production is controlled by big business they will continue to prioritise profits over animal welfare and workers wages and conditions.

The only way to really address animal welfare, and to ensure food is produced for need and not profits, is to bring the big food, live stock and agriculture companies into public ownership. On the basis of public ownership, and democratic control, a sustainable plan for food production and distribution could be implemented therefore cutting across animal cruelty and ensuring affordable food for all.

For everyone out there who has been busy writing and phoning politicians and protesting at rallies (as I have been), the content of the following recent (20th of September 2011) article (see link below) will be hearteningly good news. It indicates that all our campaigning efforts are bringing about a movement of change. Its very encouraging. So keep up the good work everybody as together we can make change happen to bring about a better world for all animals.

Frank & Sue: religions Friday, 23 September 2011 at 8:45am
I have just read the article from the uk about halal meat  put on this site by risto  if risto has read this horrific article then Iam suprised that he has asked people to vote for the greens who are for people coming into this country that have a religion that  encourages such cruelty  read the article see what they have done in what used to be a country renown for it's empathy with animals a country of animal lovers  maybe consider doing something useful like sending thses articles to our VETS here who do nothing about this crruelty
Frank & Sue: watch your vote Friday, 23 September 2011 at 8:27am
the Green party will only let in people of religious backgrounds that have ritual slaughter and come from countries where cruelty is the NORM    it defeats what we are trying to achieve here.  you can not expect to win this war in a hurry things change slowly.   If   these terrible religions  were not  the base for all this cruelty we would not have any where near the problem.  We a situation now where we are eating halal food and we can not even get that food labeled so we can choose not to eat it that's how much influence they have the more they come here the less chance we have of changing things.  If this so called small population of them already can change things so much what does our future hold?   Look at Europe and the UK see the black path we are going along.  sue

Laura of Adelaide: Nearly the end for our Sheep... Monday, 19 September 2011 at 11:01pm
I was thinking of those poor darlings aboard that disgusting sheep ship,  (Al Messilah) which was re-loaded at Port Adelaide on 3rd September.  If it really does take 17 days to sail to the Middle East, then the poor sheep are nearly at their final destination....I wonder how many are still alive and in what state they are in??!!  Just how many of our animals have died on that putrid floating graveyard??!  How many have had to stand, compacted in, next to their mates, dying on the floor, laying in their own faeces and urine?!  How horrific a sight it would be, the smell, the cries and the brutality that awaits them beggars belief...

Cor: Email Addresses for all MPs Saturday, 17 September 2011 at 9:42pm
I am posting below my list of all the email addresses for current serving MPs (will do the same in another post for all senators) in the Australian parliament. This is the list that I use when sending out my protest email letters to politicians. Just cut and past from this list as you see fit. There are one or two addresses on this list that (for one reason or another) might bounce, and which I have not yet got around to sorting out, but the rest are fine.

Hope you find it useful.

DH: Time to make a noise Saturday, 17 September 2011 at 4:07pm
Ok guys this is where we let Liberals also know that we mean business and that they cannot just sit on the sideline of this issue. AA has requested an apology from Back and for him to retract his statements regarding AA paying Indonesian workers.

What we need to do is all contact via email, letters and post all Liberal MPs/Senators  insisting on an apology for AA also. This is not only for AA but for the people of Australia and the animals, it will send a message that we will not accept being lied too or played around with in their political games. We expect honorable behavior from our politicians for our honorable campaign. This is a serious issue for us and they had better start being aware of that.

So come on guys time to start making a noise again.
