Shocking 'routine' abuse to dairy calves exposed on national radio

11 November 2011 Have your say

Animals Australia's campaign to expose the plight of bobby calves sparked an in-depth public discussion on Bush Telegraph on ABC's Radio National.

Hear from Animal Australia Executive Director Glenys Oogjes, David Basham from Australian Dairy Farmers, and dairy farmers themselves:

This is the little known fate of over 700,000 calves killed every year as 'waste products' of the Australian dairy industry.

Hope for a kinder future for bobby calves rests with informed consumers. You can make a difference today by supporting our campaign:

Judith: Just an idea ??? Friday, 6 January 2012 at 11:19am
Hello everyone,

Like you all I just love and admire lyn white so much and I've never ever met her but feel like I have. She is amazing and I'm sure very humbled by all our accolades to her which she so richly deserves, there is a place in heaven for her and people like all of us who care about animal welfare I'm sure.

I was thinking that wouldn't it be great if all 974 of us so far who have posted a comment to lyn and the wonderful AA team here could send in $25.00 each that would be $24,350 dollars to AA just like that. Just an idea that I thought would be so wonderful to help get 2012 off to a great start for AA and all of us who care about all the animals.

I'm now heading off to post my $25.00 cheque to AA.

God bless you all

Thankyou lyn white and AA looking forward to hearing lyn speak in Melbourne on the 24th feb 2012.

DH: The Project Show Wednesday, 28 December 2011 at 6:46pm
last night I saw The Project program showing their best of the year stories and they showed the Bobby calf and Dairy Industry story again which was really good to see ion prime time TV once again.
Think I will send off a thank you to the program for being so ethical and socially aware to show the story again. We need journalist and programs like these on our side to keeping the public informed.

Val-bobby calves-mv ocean shearer: Milk Tuesday, 20 December 2011 at 10:48pm
I gave milk to a hospital from me when my son was born but i am really shocked at how they treat dairy cows and bobby calves .Terribly cruel.Do they have to make so much milk. They probably tip half of it away. They are so greedy for money they would waste milk and they could make less milk and leave the bobby calves alone.
Val-bobby calves-mv ocean shearer: A Poem-Don't Forget Our Seniors.... Tuesday, 20 December 2011 at 1:19pm
One by one they pass my cage too old,too worn, too broken,no way.Way past his time,he can't run and play, then they shake their heads slowly, and go on their way.A little old man, arthritic and sore,It seems i am not wanted anymore.I once had a home,i once had a bed,A place that was warm,And where i was fed.Now my  muzzle is grey,And my eyes slowly fail,Who wants a dog so old and so frail? My family decided i didn't belong,i got in their way,My attitude was wrong, whatever excuse they made in their head, can't justify how they left me for dead. Now i sit in this cage, where day after day the younger dogs get adopted and driven away. When i had almost come to the end of my rope, you saw my face and i finally had hope. You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age, and felt i still had life beyond this cage. You took me home, gave me food and a bed,and shared your own pillow with my tired head,We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,you love me  dearly, you want me to know,Imay have lived my life with another ,but you outshine them with a love so much stronger. And i promise to return all the love i can give to you my dear person as long as i live.I may be with you for a week or for years,We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears. And when the time comes that God deems i must leave,I know you will cry and your heart ,it will grieve. And when i arrive at the bridge, all brand new,my thoughts and my heart will still be with you.And i will brag to all who will hear,of the person who made my last days so dear.Author Unknown.I read this poem from the Animal Refuge Association  in Southern River.I will put the name of my charity in properly after as my cat is yelling.

anybody who is not moved by the picture of that poor little calf has got to have a heart of stone , how can people be so cruel . no wonder rural suicide is so high if i had to do that to make money i would certainly neck myself .
boyd: stop all animal explotation Tuesday, 13 December 2011 at 9:38pm
because these dairy farmers are the way they are in this house hold we no longer buy dairy products . so because of their own greed and cruelty they get nothing from us now . in the end people not buying dairy will send them broke  .

Val-bobby calves-mv ocean shearer: Beef Central Tuesday, 13 December 2011 at 7:15am
Beef central is disgusting the way animals are treated. The poor little calves standing there is something i find so upsetting they should put this in the paper everyday for people to read about and look at before they eat beef or mince etc for Christmas.I don't eat meat .Some fish.Watch what you eat at Christmas.Animals Australia has great veg recipes.Poor bobby calves and cattle.I have written to Mr Ludwig again. As it is a billion dollar industry we will have a battle and a half to stop this cruelty.I will put flyers in public places as long as it's not untidy.Where is the best other than supermarkets i wonder.
Val-bobby calves-mv ocean shearer: Poor bobbys Tuesday, 13 December 2011 at 3:26am

Ok guys it been fun arguing with you but very unproductive, is there anyone that has some good ideas as to what we can do about the problem with the Bobby calves. Shutting down the dairy industry is not a option in the near future. We need something that is a viable alternative to selling 5 day old calves. If any of you could help me out that would be good.

Hazel Evanmes: OBESESITY.... ABC NEWS Sunday, 4 December 2011 at 8:55pm
Bare with me folks, I've just finished four night shifts and feel like......
So, 3 out of 5 of the Qld community are over weight. And a huge percentage of Qlders consume fast foods every day. Well, that would not be due to consuming the salads that is included on the Mackers or the KFC or the Hungry Jacks etc, it would be to do with the animal fats that's the biggest part of this type of food. When are these big fat slobs going to wake up?? When are parents of the kids consuming this crap going to say, no more?? When are people going to get up off their lazy arses and start cooking decent wholesome foods for their families. When are people going to realise that this sort of sh#t food is the basis of tissue, brain and body, responsiblle for a life time (short for many) in their kids. ANIMAL FAT STINKS AND IT'S BEEN WELL PROVEN, JUST ASK THE HEART FOUNDATION!!

DH: Harvey Fresh Sunday, 4 December 2011 at 6:20pm
Thought I would make the most of my bad mood (Iam seriously pissed off with the outcome from the conference for Live Export) and down with the human race state of mind. So thought  I would look at targeting what I believe is some very bad diary advertising I saw recently.

I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer. Does anyone know if there is any other sort of dairy farming practiced in Australia other than the cows being free to roam in paddocks other then when they are  being milked.

Here in WA a big player in the local dairy industry is running a TV ad where they are playing on the angle that their dairy products are sourced by happy little free range cows. This implies that there is another form of dairy farming in practise.  If they are miss using the "free range" term to miss lead the public I want them exposed. I just see red when I see this sort of manipulation happening.

DH: GREAT one down Sunday, 4 December 2011 at 4:00pm
This is not about dairy.
Once I would not have lacked compassion however Iam just getting worn out so when I saw the below attached article all I could think of was GREAT, one less station shipping cattle. Specially in light of the recent labor vote on live export.
My only concern is for the welfare of those cattle from this station apparently there are a lot of cows reading to give birth.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-12-03/graziers-rally-to-support-cattleman-in-debt/3710868

Have you all seen that the Labor party voted against stopping live export at there conference. There where a lot of bleeding heart stories coming from the NT although I dont think that made much difference they already knew they where not going to vote for it. There where some good MPs that tried fighting for it but there just was not enough of them but I applaud those like Mellisa Parke who have fought tirelessly against it.

Just wish there was some way we could put the fear of god into these people on all side of the political field. I guess the problem is that they do represent the voters (this so called human race).
I would personally like to see nature completely wipe this industry off the face of the continent, bring on the pestilents, plagues, fires and what ever else it has up its sleeve.  God I am in a bad mood.
