Girlfriend of the Year Helps Animals

ELIZABETH ANILE: Friend to Animals

Back in April, Elizabeth Anile, a Melbourne teenager with a big heart for animals, was nominated for Girlfriend of the Year. The June issue of Girlfriend brings with it the exciting news that Elizabeth has won this competition and is the 2008 Girlfriend of the Year!

Elizabeth says she saw the competition as a wonderful opportunity to gain greater awareness for her passion—animal protection, and to encourage others to choose a cruelty free lifestyle.

In Australia, some 500 million animals aren't afforded the same basic legal protection as dogs or cats. Codes of Practice (perhaps more aptly: "Codes of Cruelty"), describing how farmed animals can be treated, serve to protect cruel animal industries and condemn millions of defenseless animals to pain and suffering.

As a result, mother pigs on factory farms are confined to tiny cages barely larger than their own body. Battery hens are forced to spend their lives in a space smaller than an A4 piece of paper and as chicks have the tips of their beaks cut off with a hot blade. Male pigs, cows and sheep can be castrated without anesthetic...

Elizabeth Anile: Girlfriend of the YearAs Elizabeth explained in her interview with Animals Australia back in April: ”So many people are unaware of the amount of cruelty animals we like to 'eat' endure. I felt it was my responsibility to stand up there, reveal what happens and show girls that you can be happy, healthy and feel great without eating meat or supporting animal-abusing industries."

For her photo shoot, Elizabeth proudly displayed a SaveBabe.com poster.

In her final year at school, and aspiring to be a journalist, Elizabeth also finds the time to speak out for animals through her own animal rights organisation Australian Teens Against Animal Cruelty (ATAAC).

In 2006, Elizabeth first questioned why she'd been raised to love one animal and eat another. She realised that pigs, chickens, cows and sheep could all feel and suffer in just the same way as her family dog. That realisation sparked her decision to take animal products off her plate for good and to become a voice for animals. Elizabeth sets an inspiring example of how to lead a happy healthy life without harming others.

Thanks to those who voted for Elizabeth and helped make this opportunity possible. And a huge congratulations to Elizabeth, an inspiration and great friend to animals!
