Live Export Cruelty in Israel Revealed

Live Export Cruelty in Israel Revealed

25 August 2011 Have your say

New footage from Israel has revealed even more widespread cruelty within the live export trade.

Evidence gathered by Anonymous for Animals Rights on 12 August 2011 reveals Australian cattle tightly packed on a truck, caked in faeces and being beaten with spike-tipped poles.

The Israeli footage comes only a week after Animals Australia released new investigation footage from Turkey, revealing the brutal slaughter of animals in that country. Nine previous investigations by Animals Australia have also documented similar cruelty to Australian animals in Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, and most recently Indonesia.

Yet, as this new evidence from Israel and Turkey comes to light, the live export industry is poised to resume the live trade with Vietnam—a country which Meat and Livestock Australia, itself, acknowledges as having "potential welfare issues with animal handling associated with inexperienced handlers if the market resumes".

With damning evidence of cruelty in the live export trade in every country that Animals Australia investigators have visited, and with the tragic death of hundreds of animals on a stranded live export ship in Port Adelaide last week, the systemic animal cruelty of the live export trade could not be move evident.

This evidence of widespread cruelty, and a continued flood of letters and phone calls by concerned Australians has this week empowered Labor backbenchers to call for tighter standards on the live trade. Click here to find out more about this move by Labor backbenchers and to take action to end this cruelty.

Cor: A Piece of Good News for Animal Welfare Campaign Saturday, 1 October 2011 at 8:31pm
For everyone out there who has been busy writing and phoning politicians and protesting at rallies (as I have been), the content of the following recent (20th of September 2011) article (see link below) will be hearteningly good news. It indicates that all our campaigning efforts are bringing about a movement of change. Its very encouraging. So keep up the good work everybody as together we can make change happen to bring about a world that is a better place for all animals.

DH: Support Mandatory Stunning in Australia Wednesday, 21 September 2011 at 3:14pm
Just reminding everyone about the 23rd September deadline for letting  your thoughts known on the need for mandatory stunning of all ritual slaughter in Australia. If you haven't already sent off your comment then it is not too late. Just click on the AA link below.

http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/close-the-loophole-on-ritual-slaughter

I know I recently wrote about how fruitless I was feeling it was to keep emailing and contacting your MPs and Senators and here Iam pushing contacting them again.  I guess you can all relate to that depleted exasperated feeling of not being heard and mine came with the deferring of Tony Zappia's new bill, it was my moment of total despair.  But today is a new day and I guess never give up is an important moto.
Ruth Weston: Bill postponed until October 11 Tuesday, 20 September 2011 at 2:29pm
I see the bill to make stunning mandatory has been postponed until Oct 11 - this was on the AA facebook site.

So we now have another 3 weeks to wait - but also 3 more weeks to lobby all labour MPs and senators regarding this issue.

Good luck AA friends out there.

I am posting below my list of all the email addresses for current serving senators (will do the same in another post for all MPs) in the Australian parliament. This is the list that I use when sending out my protest email letters to politicians. Just cut and past from this list as you see fit. There are one or two addresses on this list that (for one reason or another) might bounce, and which I have not yet got around to sorting out, but the rest are fine.

Hope you find it useful.

DH: Time to make a noise Saturday, 17 September 2011 at 11:16am
Ok guys this is where we let Liberals also know that we mean business and that they cannot just sit on the sideline of this issue. AA has requested an apology from Back and for him to retract his statements regarding AA paying Indonesian workers.

What we need to do is all contact via email, letters and post all Liberal MPs/Senators  insisting on an apology for AA also. This is not only for AA but for the people of Australia and the animals, it will send a message that we will not accept being lied too or played around with in their political games. We expect honorable behavior for an honorable cause. This is a serious issue for us and they had better start being aware of that.

So come on guys time to start making a noise again.

Vanessa Roberts: Indonesia's Cattle Imports Friday, 9 September 2011 at 11:33pm
http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2011/08/26/ri-mulls-cattle-imports-us-colombia.html

If Indonesia imports cattle from the US and Colombia, the voyage from South America, compared with the short trip from Australia can be no better for the cattle's well-being .
And what guarantee will there be that those cattle will be treated any better in Indonesia ?

DH: Spark of hope Tuesday, 6 September 2011 at 4:52pm
Guys try to find the time to read the Landline article on AA's site under " Farm Animal Law Under Spotlight" it will lift your spirits no end.
I could have just sat and cried with joy after reading it. It is early days but what hope there is for our farm animals. Believe it or not it is coming from the legal field and I take my hat off to them because they can make the real difference, through the law. Thanks AA we all know you and organizations like you around the world are the back bone behind all of this.

Heather: name and shame Saturday, 3 September 2011 at 5:50pm
I am not sure what the  legality of this is but what about looking at the AUSTRALIAN farmers who knowingly send their animals to these places. They can not say they didnt know...we all know what happens to these  animals. These australians are allowing it,surely they are making enough money without having to resort to live export.Maybe naming and shaming these so called human beings could be a more productive way....lets see how proud their neighbours and chidren ar of them.Shouldnt we have a right to kow where our meat comes from so we can boycott purchasing from those farmers who send their stock to live trade??
I ,as I am sure others are feeling the same, are feeling demonstrations are not working.Surely there is something else we can do?

Laura of Adelaide: Email to Senator McEwen Friday, 2 September 2011 at 3:56pm
Here is my email to Senator McEwen with regard to urging him to vote for mandatory stunning of live animals prior to slaughter with an eventual end of the live animal export trade:

SENATOR McEWEN:  Please add your weight behind a vote for an end to the barbaric live export trade. There is no justifiable reason for animal cruelty!!! This is a blemish on Australia. We live in a world where stories are transmitted across tha planet in an instant, via the internet (Facebook, Twitter, email etc etc). Other people in other countries are hearing of this and how far behind Australia is in the civilised world with regard to animal welfare concerning livestock. I already have seen comments coming in from other countries, expressing how surprised and appalled they are at how this dispicable and vile trade has been going on now for 30 years!!! Labor, up to this present time, have proved to be no better than all the previous Governments. When the Parliament next convenes in Canberra, please remember my words and vote for the mandatory stunning of living animals - that's the very least you can do for them. Thank you.

Laura of Adelaide: Beautiful People... Friday, 2 September 2011 at 1:22pm
Hi folks - this morning I was listening to my Chris Brown CD in the car on the way to work and the track:  "Beautiful People" came on.  I suddenly realised that the lyrics could well be applied to all YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE out there - the ones that truly care passionately about our wonderful animals and suffer when they suffer.  The words ...."the beauty's deep inside....don't let them get you down" really resounds with me about you all.  There are alot of people on this site who are hurting badly after knowing of the cruelty out there.  They are dumbfounded, shocked and in pain.  But I say we must fight on to end this cruel blood-soaked trade and RESTORE AUSTRALIA'S PRIDE!!!    SO KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!!!  EVENTUALLY, WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS FOR THE ANIMALS!!!!!

Matilda66: Reply to Trish Thursday, 1 September 2011 at 2:45pm
I agree with you Trish. I was just stating the facts. Yes I do sound like a defeatist but I've also been following this plight since it began 8 years ago and I'm just too sad to continue. It's affected my wellbeing. The only tactic I had left was my pledge to be a veg. I  don't have faith in pollies and greedy livestock organisations like many Aussies don't. I too only have faith in The People but we need hundreds of thousands of people to be involved in this plight not only here but overseas to make any difference.

Cor: Nominate Lyn White for Australian of the Year Wednesday, 31 August 2011 at 7:02pm
When I saw the 4 Corners footage I cried for the suffering of all of those animals, and for all of the countless ones that had gone before them; and I am still crying. I have felt so ashamed that Australia was allowing animals to be so horrendously treated. In fact, for the first time in my life I felt ashamed to be Australian. But when I saw the work that Lyn White is tirelessly doing to help the animals, I was able again to feel proud to be Australian. Lyn White is an inspiration for a better world and that is why I believe that she deserves to be our next "Australian of the Year". I am going to nominate Lyn White for "Australian of the Year" and I urge other Australians to do the same.

Nominations can be submitted by going to www.australianoftheyear.org.au . The closing date for nominations has been extended until midnight on the 2nd of September (this Friday).
Matilda66: Wake Up Australia! Wednesday, 31 August 2011 at 4:36pm
We can complain and vent our anger as much as we want but the situation will never change. It doesn't matter who we vote for. It will always be exactly the same. It has been for years and years. Politicians do not care about animal welfare whether it is in Australia or overseas. You all know it's about dollars only. Now think about the dolphins next time you go out for a sushi after The Cove doco last Sunday on ABC 1. Do you holiday in any of these countries? Not me, never have, never will.
