Live export review omits key recommendation

Live export review omits key recommendation

21 October 2011 Have your say

A taxpayer funded review aimed at 'improving' animal welfare standards has glossed over the most serious aspect of animal cruelty in the live export trade...

On June 13 2011, in response to the shocking cruelty exposed by Animals Australia's investigation in Indonesia, Federal Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig announced a Government-commissioned review into the live export trade. The stated purpose of the review was aimed at improving animal welfare, but to allow live exports to continue.

Some four months later, the findings of the review conducted by Bill Farmer have been publicly released.

While the purpose of the Farmer review ruled out any suggestion of a live export phase out, it did represent an important opportunity to help reduce the suffering of millions of animals through its recommendations. And while the review has recommended a string of changes to the operation of the live trade, it also has one glaring omission — the failure to endorse mandatory stunning.

All of the most distressing cruelty exposed by Animals Australia's investigations is the result of un-stunned slaughter. Horrifying scenes — of animals writhing in pain, stumbling helplessly with half-severed necks, and watching in terror as other animals are butchered alive — will never be forgotten. It was scenes like these that sparked a public outcry which led to the suspension of the live export trade to Indonesia.

Fear of further trade suspensions has been the catalyst for the rapid adoption of stunning in Indonesia — from just 8% prior to Animals Australia's exposé, to a projected 90% stunning of Australian animals at the end of 2011. This is despite Australia's live export trade having operated in the region for more than two decades.

In Jordan, Animals Australia's work with the Jordanian Royal family has to date led to the uptake of stunning in 80% of abattoirs nation-wide.

With clear precedents as to the achievability of stunning and wide acceptance by religious authorities, it is alarming that Australia fails to ensure even this most basic level of protection for animals born into its care. As a result, while live exports continue, millions of Australian animals will still endure the horrors of fully conscious slaughter in many different countries.

Write your own live export review

Tragically, the Farmer review is reinforcing the view of both the ALP and Coalition that the slaughter of fully conscious animals is an acceptable level of cruelty in order to continue the live export trade. If you disagree, please urgently send your own opinion to your MP, who will soon have an opportunity to vote on mandatory stunning for all Australian animals that are exported live.

Did you know... about 25% of all white sugar is refined using animal bones?

And did you know about Gelatine? used is sweets, jellies and cosmetics....

"Gelatin is a mixture of peptides and proteins produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen extracted from the boiled bones, connective tissues, organs and some intestines of animals such as domesticated cattle, and pigs."

Laura of Adelaide: Mahatma Gandhi's Seven Deadly Sins... Saturday, 29 October 2011 at 2:53pm
The Seven Blunders of the World is a list that Mahatma Gandhi gave to his grandson, written on a piece of paper on their final day together, just before he was assassinated.  These are:
1. Wealth without work
2. Pleasure without conscience
3. Knowledge without character
4. Commerce without morality
5. Science without humanity
6. Worship without sacrifice
7. Politics without principle

Hmm....there are several there that bring to mind the attitude and evident inaction of our Australian politicians who demonstrate no conscience, the greed and immoral actions of the MLA, Livecorp, greedy farmers etc.
Wise words from a very wise man...who in later life after becoming interested in spiritual matters, became a Vegetarian.

Leisa Preen: Cruelty to other species Friday, 28 October 2011 at 9:57pm
Why oh why are we as human beings just so unfeeling to other
sentient beings which share our beautiful planet.  I seem to keep
saying the same thing over and over again.    We who care, must
be resilient and keep trying-  we will succeed  - we will be victorious.
This we must believe -  remember people power.  They cannot
speak for themselves, we speak for them - they with their soulful
and pleading eyes...

Laura of Adelaide: LABOR - We Will NOT forget!!!... Friday, 28 October 2011 at 9:04pm
The arrogant, smug politicians that we see on TV, pathetically joking with eachother will suddenly realise - their time has come....at ELECTION TIME!!!!!  They seem to think that Animal Welfare is only a minor issue and that "more important" issues such as Carbon Taxing us etc will take presidence in our minds ....but people - they are making a fatal miscalculation!!!!!  Animal Welfare has been highlighted in the minds of the Australian community; a traditionally compassionate society and, WE WILL NOT FORGET!
The Labor Party has had several chances now to redeem itself with the Ban Live Export bill, then the plea to enforce mandatory stunning in overseas abattoirs and now, yet another failure today - dithering on the mandatory stunning of sheep here in Australia at Kosher and Halal abattoirs located in Victoria and South Australia, right under the noses of the Australian Public - SHAME ON YOU ALL!!!!! Labor has been exposed for what it is and will suffer the consequences at the polling stations across the Nation. Rival political parties need to take heed of this and get their Animal Welfare policies in place.  This is a HOT ISSUE and now that the cat is out of the bag via the Four Corners program, and well publicised on websites such as Animals Australia, it will not go away - EVER!!!....Politicians are only fooling themselves if they think it will....!

Guys dont forget AA's rally in Melbourne this weekend for those on the east coast if you can make it please please go and let the voices be heard and faces be seen.

Also for those who cant make it I have just had an email from WSPA who are organizing a lot of events around Australia leading up to the Labor Party National Conference in  Dec. Because it came in an email was not sure how to transfer the email across so if you are interested you will need to go to the  WSPA site www.WSPA.org.au and click on End Labors Support of LIve Export.

I hope AA does not mind me putting this on this site however I thought it is all for the same cause.
