Live Export Causes MP Backlash

Live Export Causes MP Backlash

7 July 2011 Have your say

Less than twenty-four hours after the Gillard Government resumed live cattle exports to Indonesia, nine courageous Labor backbenchers have come forward to challenge the government's willingness to accept the slaughter of fully conscious animals.

The 'international standards' that the Gillard Government will require as part of their 'supply chain assurance' continue to permit cattle to have their throats cut without stunning — a brutal and painful death that is illegal in Australia.

MP Kelvin Thomson spoke on behalf of the nine backbenchers: "There are some serious questions concerning this matter that we will aim to resolve within the Government ... The first concerns the issue of stunning ... Until we get to this point this issue will not go away, the Australian people expect cattle to be stunned before they are killed."

This bold break from party ranks again reflects the growing concern not only within the community but amongst politicians about the systemic cruelty in the live export trade. But unfortunately, when the bills to ban live export are put to a vote, party policies threaten to constrain caring politicians from honestly representing the concerns of the public.

In a separate press conference today, Animals Australia, RSPCA Australia and independent MP Andrew Wilkie called on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to put the bills to end live export to a conscience vote. Such a move would allow politicians from all parties to accurately and honestly represent their constituents without threat of expulsion from their party. You too can call on Gillard to allow a conscience vote by clicking here.

The strength of public opposition to live export can empower politicians to speak out, as the nine Labor backbenchers have done. These politicians have been elected to represent the public, and when they recieve messages of support it not only strengthens their call for change, but encourages them to do more for animals. Please take a moment to write a short thank you email to these nine MPs for speaking up for the animals:

  • Mr Kelvin Thomson MP:
  • Ms Anna Burke MP:
  • Ms Laura Smyth MP:
  • Mr Darren Cheeseman MP:
  • Mr Steve Gibbons MP:
  • Mr Mike Symon MP:
  • Mr Tony Zappia MP:
  • Mr Steve Georganas MP:
  • Ms Melissa Parke MP:

If your MP was not amongst those who spoke out to oppose the killing of fully conscious animals, please phone their office to ask them why, and urge them to support an end to the cruelty of live animal export. Click here to find contact details for your MP.

Witness tells of mass animal grave Lindsay Murdoch Mataranka, Northern Territory
April 25, 2011

"Agonising death" ... a carcass at the Mataranka property.

CARCASSES were bulldozed into a mass grave and set alight after animals were starved and left to die on a university-run cattle station, a new witness in one of Australia's worst animal cruelty cases has said.

The Northern Territory Ombudsman, Carolyn Richards, says the witness has told her office about the incident as Charles Darwin University disputes the number of cattle and horses that died on its Mataranka Station in the territory.

Some of the animals were so weak they were eaten by meat ants or ripped apart by dingoes, wild dogs and feral pigs.

Advertisement: Story continues below
Ms Richards told the Herald the grave on an isolated part of the station explains why her estimate that 800 animals perished differs from the university, which puts the number at 216.

She said the witness, whose name has not been made public, came forward after the Ombudsman had completed a report on the cruelty and neglect which was tabled in the NT Parliament in October last year. Barney Glover, the university's vice-chancellor, said he had not been told about the new evidence and would contact the Ombudsman about it.

He said the university based its estimate on a study it commissioned last year and physical evidence on the property.

Ms Richards said she was "devastated" the NT government had failed to prosecute anyone over offences that occurred on the 77,000-hectare station 400 kilometres south of Darwin in 2009 and last year. In her report, Ms Richards said many cattle were tick-infested, emaciated and dehydrated while others were too weak to stand and may have spent days on the ground before dying.

Still-alive cattle were seen with their bowels ripped out by dingoes, unable to stand. The hoof of one horse fell off, which only occurs after a long period of neglect and months of suffering.

"Some [animals] would have died an agonising death and those that survived were distressed, probably for months," Ms Richards said.

University students training to work in the pastoral industry said they were distressed after seeing animals suffering and dying.

Ms Richards found the response of managers and senior staff of the university when they were shown evidence in September 2009 was "tardy, inadequate and not proportionate to the degree of suffering of the animals."

She reported that the biggest contributing factor was the lack of action and management by the then station manager Ian Gray, who no longer works for the university.

But in an interview last week, Ms Richards also criticised the NT government for failing to act on her recommendation to take legal action against those responsible before a September 2010 legal deadline to initiate prosecutions.

The NT Country Liberals opposition accused the government of a cover-up.

Documents released under freedom of information laws revealed the NT Local Government Minister, Malarndirri McCarthy, was warned by her department that if the university was convicted under the Animal Welfare Act, potential students would be deterred from enrolling.

Professor Glover denied the university has played down the cruelty. The station has a new manager, the number of cattle has been reduced and the university has set-up a Mataranka Advisory Committee.

V & S: Julia Gillard has no Conscience. Friday, 5 August 2011 at 1:53pm
Julia Gillard doesn't have a conscience.  She couldn't care less.  If politicians are too scared to speak up than why are they in politics?
Of all the emails and letters I've sent.  Nothing, zip, zero and from reading the other posts it wasn't worth the space on your hard-drive.
The Govenor General has no Conscience.
We are living in a land of ME ME ME.  Sad really.

Does anyone who cares for wildlife habitats live on an acre of land or more, because I would love to put you in touch with an organisation called the Wildlife Land Trust (This includes concerned farmers as well)
It is a worthwhile cause, and unfortunately I only live on a handkerchief.
Please Contact Evan Quartermain WLF on 9973 1728, and say that V told you to ring.  The website is www.wildlifelandtrust.org

Don't worry, I haven't got off the track of stopping the live export trade, however I am trying to get as much info out  there as possibl.

V & S: Refresh our cruelty to all Animals Legislation Immediately Friday, 5 August 2011 at 1:38pm
Let's hammer them for more legislation.  I am so tired of the overpaid "Farnarkelers" (our made up word)  hiding behind legislation.  Lets have the legislations of this country exposed and made transparent.
PS - I don't believe we should allow politicians to consume alcohol or other mind bending drugs whilst they are at work.  Perhaps that's why this country is stuffed.  Then again - when do they work?  This is a bit of a conundrum************
PSS - I think we should start from scratch and have the people who have knowledge of animals create legislation towards their welfare.  Get the right man for he job (or woman)-sorry...

Can anyone tell I am getting bored with Politics. Perhaps you could vote for me!  My problem is I can't lie to save myself.

This is the second post as the other one was to  reply and no one ever sees them.

V & S: Soft Toys made in China. Thursday, 4 August 2011 at 3:35pm
Dear All,
I purchased a "Bobby Calf" to help raise money for our cause.  I looked at the tags and I was crossing my fingers - Guest where it was made? - CHINA - the country with the worst record of cruelty and torture to animals in the world.  What hair is on it "dog" "cat" as they disguise the products used under other names.  I am not at all happy about it.  I have contacted Australiana online to see if they make to order as everything is Australian owned and produced using Australian products.  If they can make a Koala, I'm sure they can make a calf pig or any other animal.
I'm now tentative about my "Bobby Calf"  It looks cute, but were any animals tortured to make it?  It's a bit of a catch22 situation.

DH: Interesting Link on stopping the trade Thursday, 4 August 2011 at 1:07am
I put the link below on another site but thought it might catch someones attention here also.  Below is a link to a resent radio interview by Geraldine Doogue  with the former NZ Agr Minister who stopped the live export trade in NZ.

Hope you take the time to listen to it, it is up lifting as it shows there is still a life for all after the ban and that some govts can make operating in an economical and morally ethical way work. It just takes guts.

Fortunately we have a minister like Wilkie who also has guts to stand up for what is morally right. It is not easy to have to stand up to these bullies every day and Iam very grateful for his strength of character.

I have sent the link below to all the nine MPs opposing the trade and some others. Also to Ludwig with the hope that he might either be educated or shamed. Might be nice if he got a few more copies sent to him via email just so he knows we are not uninformed out here in the real world.

Rosina Saunders: ANIMAL LAW LECTURE SERIES Wednesday, 3 August 2011 at 9:31pm
Hi V and everyone else....

If you google "2011 Animal Law Lecture Series", there's some interesting reading there.

They haven't yet posted Peter Stevenson's address from Monday night, BUT there's a link there which gives an abstraction of the proposed address - what is there at the moment was posted before the address was given.

Perhaps this is the key we're all looking for - legal represenation for animals leading to changes in legislation, which will give RSPCA, AA and other animal protection bodies wider powers under which they can act.

Would love to hear what everyone else thinks.

Rosina Saunders: EUROPE IS AWARE OF OUR LIVE EXPORT SITUATION Tuesday, 2 August 2011 at 10:17pm
This article was in the Sydney Morning Herald, August 1:

CRITICS BEEF UP LIVE EXPORT CENSURE
Louise Hall

"AUSTRALIA'S live export trade ranks as one of the world's worst because of the sheer number of animals involved and the long distances they endure", a leading European animal rights lobbyist has said.

Peter Stevenson, chief policy adviser for Compassion in World Farming, said the government's decision to end the month-long live export ban was premature, as it would take months or years to improve the practices in Indonesian abattoirs.

Mr. Stevenson, who will deliver the keynote address at the University of Sydney's annual Animal Law Lecture Series tonight, said footage of cruel slaughter practices broadcast on the ABC's Four Corners was the worst he had seen.

Compassion in World Farming has long campaigned for an end to live animal transport for slaughter.

The Australian live export industry "is probably the world's worst because of the length of time to takes to get to Indonesia and the Middle East, and the utterly inhumane slaughter methods inflicted on the animals once they arrive".

"Public pressure has resulted in a decline in the trade of live sheep and veal from Britain to continental Europe from about 2.5 million head a year to about 30,000", he said.

The government lifted the ban on live exports on July 6 and the first shipment of 3000 head of cattle by the agribusiness giant Elders is expected to be completed next week.

The managing director of Elders, Malcolm Jackman, said the company would adhere to international standards for animal welfare, including tracking individual animals through the supply chain.

But Mr. Stevenson, who has played a leading role in winning bans in the European Union on battery cages and sow stalls, said, "animal welfare groups worldwide were UNCONVINCED".

Did anyone else see this article??

Does anyone have any involvement with the Compassion in World Farming Group??

CD: Please Consider Cruelty Free Alternatives Tuesday, 2 August 2011 at 11:49am
These are excerpts from the Animals Australia website:

Broiler Chickens (meat chickens including free range and organic)

{When the trucks arrive at the slaughterhouse, chickens are pulled from the crates and shackled upside down by their feet into metal stirrups on an overhead conveyor.. The conveyor carries them into the killing room where their heads pass through an electrified water bath intended to stun them. As they pass along further, an automatic knife cuts their throat, and then they proceed into a scalding tank to loosen their feathers before plucking.
Unfortunately things do not always run smoothly. Some birds lift their heads and miss the electrified water bath and they are therefore still fully conscious when they reach the automatic knife. Some birds may also miss the knife and are then lowered into the 50 degree scalding tank while still alive.
Back-up people are supposed to cut the throats of the chickens that miss the automatic knife, but due to the emphasis on speed in the processing plants this may not always occur. There are no animal welfare inspectors onsite to ensure that the slaughter process is humane.   ]

Male chickens are a waste product of this industry and are either gassed or ground up alive.

Sheep and Cattle Slaughter:

Stunning is effective in the vast majority of cases, however even in the most well managed facilities there is always a risk that the stunning procedure may fail. A small percentage of animals may need to be stunned again before losing sensibility, and on rare occasions animals may even 'wake up' during the slaughter process. Whilst prior stunning is the only way to ensure that slaughter is conducted in a remotely humane way, the truth is that the only way individuals can be certain that animals do not suffer during slaughter, is to consider cruelty-free alternatives.

Judie: forth coming rally Saturday, 30 July 2011 at 8:08pm
Did anyone here  Sunrise today (Sat)where their news reader stated wods like  "thousands of people would be rallying today Satuday,  to ban the live trade exports.  They would be wearing white sheets and have their hair red"  I thought the rally for today had been cancelled (moving to 14th) so who were the organisers and did it actually happen as there was nothing on the news that I kept switching through regarding this.
I   am feeling rather concerned as everything seems to have gone very quiet news wise.  I did hear today that Elders were going to begin sending the cattle but only to those slaughter houses that stun and the RSPCA made a comment that they remained unsure of the treatment of the cattle and that Elders had not stated in public that the cattle would be stunned.  The only comments, other than today, that I hear on various news channels is how the poor farmers are suffering and the cattle export needs to get started.  No mention of the poor cattle and their treatment.
No one seems to be able to tell me how the cattle will be stunned - will they be in an upright position or will they still be rope tied in our disgusting restraining pens?  Also who has trained these workers in how to stun?  How can so many thousands of cattle be exported - seems to be the same amount to me - when they are only going to Elders?  It all seems to be very secretive, so what is going on behind closed doors?  When I continue to write to MPs I just get the same old same old.  They refuse to be concrete about it all.  They probably don't really know and don't care as long as the farmers are happy and they remain MPs.
I feel more and more disturbed as the process goes on.

I will be going to all rallys but i must say i don' think it matters if we go dressed in sheets covered in blood or in control armed with facts and knowledge. I don't think it would make any difference to people such as the ilk of Rudd and Kattar nothing would penetrate them .The only thing they understand is VOTES MONEY AND POWER.

We could slash our throats in front of them as many times as they slash the poor cattles throats and it would not make any impact on them....

Labour is on the nose right now but if the Liberial/National Party get into power....... who are gunning to get this trade back and running as fast as possible God Help Us....VOTE GREENS

Rosina Saunders: PHILOSOPHERS ON ANIMAL CRUELTY Wednesday, 13 July 2011 at 10:40pm
Albert Schweitzer.....

"Hear our humble prayer, Oh God, for our friends animals who are suffering;  for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated;  for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against the bars;  for any that are hunted.....for all that must be put to death.
We entreat them all Thy mercy and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion, gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals".

And Robert Loius Stevenson:....

"We consume the carcases of creatures of like appetites, passions and organs as our own, and fill the slaughterhouses daily with screams of pain and fear".
