Indonesian live export to decline; cruelty to continue

Indonesian live export to decline; cruelty to continue

16 December 2011 Have your say

News reports that the Indonesian Government has committed to banning all live cattle imports from Australia within a few years points to the volatility of the live export trade — but it signals little reprieve for animals.

Australia's live export industry is already increasing the number of animals sent into other markets including the Middle East, Egypt and Turkey — where, like Indonesia, animals are permitted to be brutally slaughtered while fully conscious.

The horrendous practices documented inside Indonesian slaughterhouses by Animals Australia earlier this year sparked an enormous public outcry calling for an end to the live export trade. For the first time, the Australian public saw a glimpse of hidden practices that were known to the live export industry for more than a decade.

In 2011 Animals Australia also conducted an investigation in Turkey, showing horrific routine slaughter practices. Despite this, animals continue to be sent to this destination. The live export industry continues to expand their trade into new markets with the full knowledge that the routine slaughter practices in importing countries fall well below the standards expected by the Australian community.

Following the public backlash after cruelty to Australian cattle was exposed in Indonesia, the Gillard Government issued new rules for live export permits, which are being rolled out to all markets over the next 12 months. These new rules are based on 'International' (OIE) standards, which do not require animals to be stunned before slaughter. Despite pressure from the Australian public, animal welfare groups, and many of from within their own party, the Labor Government has rejected calls to mandate stunning for animals exported live from Australia.

As a result, millions of cattle and sheep raised for the live export trade will not only still face the gruelling sea voyage to foreign countries, those who survive the journey will still risk a brutal slaughter without the mercy of stunning in overseas abattoirs.

Indonesia's decision to dramatically reduce cattle imports from Australia demonstrates that this is a high risk industry not only for animals, but for those rural communities that have become too economically reliant upon it. The only way that animals can be protected from the cruelty of live export is for the Australian Government to ban it.

TAKE ACTION — IN 30 SECONDS

Every day that live animal export is allowed to continue, more animals face the cruelty of treacherous journeys on the open oceans and a terrifying death that is guaranteed neither quick nor painless. Please click here to send an instant message to your MP and State Senators to urge them to use their power to end the Government's support for the inherently cruel live animal export trade.

Trisha: MP Rob Oakeshotte wants to burn koala habitat for power Thursday, 23 February 2012 at 1:44am
This is absolutely unbelievable. Port MacQuarie houses koalas that are now in trouble because of human over-expansion & disease, numbers in serious decline already, now a pyromaniac and some loggers...

An interesting article, Super-predatory Humans, considers how we came to this point in our dominance of animals.

Trisha: Val, I've lost your post re cockatoos Thursday, 23 February 2012 at 12:29am
Had a quick look & the red-tailed black cockatoos are listed as endangered in NSW so no-one could move them due to noise, but I couldn't find any such protection existing in WA for them, although there is much reference to them being threatened with extinction. Below is a link to a petition for the protection of their environment. Anyone else who would like to sign, your assistance would be appreciated. If I were you I'd arrange a flash-mob and some media coverage beneath the tree the bird lives in and show the locals what a miserable lot your councillors are for allowing it to occur. Take a petition along too!

The red-tailed cockatoo i put in is called Monty and i'm still worried as the people who own him had him when he was only 20 days old.My council will evict him from his home and they told me they had "no comment"last time i called so i will try again tomorrow and i'm sure they cannot just let a bird go from it's family like this.I have had trouble getting through to them before about cats dead on the road.

Hazel Evanmes: Kevin Rudd resigns Wednesday, 22 February 2012 at 8:04pm
I want you guys to know I'm not a polical activist, obsessed with who should be in or out. I simply want the right person to govern this country. Someone who is in it for the people of this country and are interested in what the people want. That was Kevin Rudd folks, but he was stabbed in the back by our corrupt, couldn't give a stuff about what the people were concerned about, Jullia Gillard. Now he has resigned as the Foreign Affairs minister, obviously because there were people who saw him as a major threat, and were out to bring this man to his knees. That wrongly happens in the unprofessional realms of politics. SHAME ON ALL THOSE INVOLVED IN POLITICS, LABOR, INDEPENDENTS, THE GREENS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE LIBERALS, NOT TO MENTION THE LOUD PATHETIC VOICE OF BOB, I LOVE LIVE EXPORT KATTER.
Let's vote for Kevin Rudd who will no doubt challenge the leadship of this country, despite the fact he has encouraged live export in the past. Maybe if we all contact him, let him know how we feel about animal welfare, he may just listen.
This man after all, kept this country from drowning in the grips of a world resession, which was no mean feat. Jullia would have been saying at the time, 'what world resession?', I'm too busy trying to prove to this country that a carbon tax is needed, because that will make me look like a hero, even though, she's admitted to not knowing if it would be a sucess or not. And costing us multi millions of dollars!!

Trisha: An Evening with Lyn White in Sydney: Central messages Wednesday, 22 February 2012 at 11:06am
Last night the auditorium at the Con was packed, not the usual rows of empty seats people pay for then don't arrive. When she took the stage we rose as one to applaud her courage and acknowledge all she has done , her heroism, and what she stands for: a kinder world for animals. Lyn is among the best and most powerful speakers I have heard in my lifetime, flowing directly from point to point to convey her message: While humans have been searching for their purpose in life, they always sought to dominate 'different' others. Her belief is that humans have taken the wrong path in their domination of others, including animals, and the resulting abuse. Lyn said this is now out-dated and needs to be changed in order for humanity to reach its purpose, which is to be humane, and for each generation to leave behind a more compassionate and ethical legacy than the last. As I was leaving the reception, I saw Lyn talking to some volunteers so I introduced myself as "One of the AA members who's always on the online forum - thought it was only fair to represent you guys while I was at it! In history there is a time and a place for every famous person, and this time is Lyn's, to make the world a better place for the animals, and for us. I'm not easily impressed, but I knew that in the presence of Lyn White, I was in the presence of greatness. Yeah, that's a cliche, but cliche's are cliche's because of their truths. Lyn would like us to focus on the areas of greatest suffering until they are ended, namely: Ban Live Export and Factory Farms. She said the biggest contribution any of us can make is to know exactly what we are putting into our shopping baskets in terms of how it got there, and to try to support ethical producers while avoiding buying from any who put profit before animal well-being.Also, we need to gently inform others when we can, as a dropped pebble sends out ripples, one seed can be planted, relayed, to many, and grow. Lyn said that she and the AA staff are on it 7 days a week and that in order to effect real change, we need to be too. Don't worry about being different to others, there will be more of us as people become more informed, aware and in touch with their consciences. Of course Lyn believes that eventually, we will succeed. :-)))))

boyd: CCTV in abbatiors Wednesday, 22 February 2012 at 10:29am
Just had emailed to me the greatest load of crap that anyone could throw at a person [ i might have been born at night but it wasnt last night  ] this crap was thrown by THE NSW FOOD AUTHORITY . It stated that the cruelty at the abbatior that was closed is alledged WHAT A LOAD OF OF HUMAN EXCREMENT THIS IS . Its on film how much more evidence do you need , and then i went on to say allegations . This is like saying to the jews the holocaust didnt happen , even thought its on film . THE NSW FOOD AUTHORITY  then said abbatiors operate at high standards and there is no need for CCTV and there will be none . They are going to put on more inspectors and unanounced vists , well they had all that before  less a few inspectors , and it did not work WHY WILL IT NOW WORK . It seems like a state issue but i think the production of our food should be a national issue so all abbatiors in australia operate under the same conditions , and UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF CCTV .

Laura of Adelaide: Round the World - For the Animals!... Tuesday, 21 February 2012 at 10:23pm
Well, guys...some of you asked if there were animal welfare organisations similar to Animals Australia in other countries, so I have been round the world (not yet, - LOL!) looking for websites that may be of interest to you.  So far I have found Animal Equality in the UK, The Blue Cross (UK), In Defense of Animals (UK), ESMA, (Egypt) KARA (Korea) and now ANAW (Africa).  Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) works together with communities and stakeholders in promoting humane treatment of farm, wild and companion animals through compassion, care, appreciation and protection.  (You have gotta go to the Home Web Page, just to look at the picture of the brown hen, sitting on a puppy! - totally gorgeous!!!!!!)
:-D

Here is the latest update from Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd.

Boarding of the armed Shonan Maru No. 2 Japanese Security Vessel which was in Australian waters at the time of the boarding was a HUGE SUCCESS!....and also highlights the ineptitude of Gillard and how it couldn't have cost the Australian Taxpayers nowhere near $1 million to retrieve the 3 hostages:

Laura of Adelaide: ESMA: Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals... Tuesday, 21 February 2012 at 9:26pm
The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) was formed in late 2007 in response to a horrific shooting spree of street dogs by the Egyptian government. A small group of Egyptians and expatriates came together to fight the notion of population control and to protect and rescue the animals in immediate danger. ESMA is a charitable organisation registered in Egypt that operates a shelter and adoption centre. They are committed to improving animal welfare in Egypt in all areas of need, including: dogs and cats; donkeys and horses; animals in the Cairo zoo; and pet shops. ESMA is an associated charity of the Worldwide Veterinary Service.  They are presently desperately trying to help starving horses, left alone in stables that normally work in the tourist trade near the Pyramids, abandoned by their owners after the civil unrest.  Animals all over the world are in need of charities to care for them.

It is wonderful to see that in of all places, there is such a wonderful organisation, that is ESMA!

sally anna: CCTV= CC CRUELTY Tuesday, 21 February 2012 at 8:51pm
Yes of course they don't want CCTV because that would be the end of cruelty to animals and basically leave many people without a job. Mummy when i grow up i want to torture animals and get paid for it. Isn't there laws against that???
What is the difference between someone cruelly treating a pet dog or cat. Animals are animals and cruelty is cruelty. STOP "beating" around the bush and put an end to this abomination now!!
My grandfather fought for this country with his life he would be turning in his grave to see what our "leaders" will put up with for monetary gain. SHAME ON ANYONE WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO STOP THIS AND JUST SIMPLY SAYS "NO I DON'T WANT TO"!!!!!!!!!!!!
