Twenty thousand messages bring end to non-stun slaughter closer

23 September 2011 Have your say

Australians expect that on our own shores animals will at least be spared from the terror of fully conscious slaughter.

Though usually illegal in Australia, a loophole is allowing some SA & VIC abattoirs to kill fully conscious sheep for a small ritual slaughter market. When we alerted our supporters that the Primary Industries Standing Committee (PISC) was to consider closing this cruel loophole, a tide of action followed. Almost 20,000 people voiced their condemnation of this cruel practice. Now we need to place pressure on the state Ministers for Agriculture, who will ultimately make the decision on this important issue.

The PISC met on Friday September 23rd where they decided on their recommendation to the Federal and State Agriculture Ministers. It will be the Ministers who have the final say on whether or not Australia will spare all sheep a prolonged painful death in abattoirs on its shores.

The PISC recommendation will not be made public, but the thousands of messages that they have received during the last week will have left no doubt that the community wants to see an end to this practice.

The Ministers will make their decision at the meeting of the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC) on 28 October. Please click here to send an urgent message to the Ministers to close the loophole and end this brutal practice.

Australia is the great  nation it  is today because we obtained our statue OFF THE SHEEP'S BACK.
Humans use &  abuse animals for PROFIT. Exporting animals  without securing a painless death, then expect to continue to trade.
Public outrage appears to fallen on deaf ears.... typical behaviour from our elected represenatives. Rest assured they will hear loud & clear come the next election, the peopl's voices e will be heard at the polling boths. SHAME SHAME SHAME

I wonder how are we ever going to mix freely with muslims when their attitude to animals for example is so alien and so inhumane.
their profits teach kindness ,yet it does not extend to animals.

Margaret Setter: Show sheep and cattle some compassion. Monday, 10 October 2011 at 2:51pm
Ritual killing of animals without pre-stunning represented a set of standards appropriate to the time.  This practice is now archaic and cruel, given we have the means to render an animal unconscious before slitting his/her throat.  This practice should be abolished by law.  Better still, I would urge consumers of animal flesh to include vegetarian meals as part of the diet.  It's not so difficult.  I know, because I was an omnivore until I was 50 but have been vegetarian/vegan for 26 years.

Stop facilitating any barbaric treatment to animals. It is long due  the day we would have law protecting and respecting  rather than using animals for economic purposes of any kind.

Barbara Lingman: Ritual Bull-crap Sunday, 9 October 2011 at 1:44pm
Why is it always, we change our laws to suit migrants who come here to start a new life, but then they want to change our laws so they can feel at home??? No wonder there are racial tensions in this country...our whole way of life is being destroyed to placate the barbarians who have one agenda, and that is to put us on our knees. Ritual Slaughter of our farm animals is just the beginning. Lamberts townsville are selling halel meat, meat from where I might ask?? They have lost me.

Raelene: Cruel slaughter practices Sunday, 9 October 2011 at 12:36pm
My pet sheep died last year at the grand old age of 9 years.  I can tell you 100% that sheep have their own distinct and individual personalities every bit as much as cats, dogs, (humans!) and any other animal.  The fact that this practice is condoned anywhere in Australia (and overseas) breaks my heart.

Trisha: We are fighting the mighty dollar here Sunday, 9 October 2011 at 4:19am
The money concern is at bottom of most of the animal abuse within Australia. The wagyu.org website details how one wagyu cow can sell for over four and a half thousand dollars - for one cow. Mulesing is done to sheep because it's cheaper and easier for farmers not to have to crutch and dag their sheep once a year. As for people overseas being crueller than we, what about our own politicians who are allowing this to go on, with the full knowledge that these animals are being tortured so the economy will stay fat. Meanwhile some farmers still take pregnant animals to shows, knowing they will give birth whilst surrounded by a gaping crowd - all in the name of promotional publicity. The buck stops with us right here in Australia if we are to end the suffering of our own animals. It is within our power to keep at our pollies until they ban killing without stunning, and live export (be it for food or breeding stock).
DH: A great result so far Saturday, 8 October 2011 at 8:37pm
Guys not sure if you all have received an email from RSPCA advising that last month MP's and Senators received over 50,000 emails requesting compulsory stunning on and off shore for all animals. This is a great result and not to be sneezed at by the Govt.
I know it is not a ban of the trade but one step at a time and with this in place if stunning cannot be guaranteed at an off shore location  then the animals just do not leave our shores.

This great response however does not mean we stop but that we  keep hammering them with even more requests until they  take notice. I do believe there are a lot of good  MPs out there that want this in place as much as we do. After all they have to sleep at night also so our constant bombardment with emails, phone calls and letters gives them the ammunition to make things happen.
