Victory! Broome Speaks Out for Dolphins!

Mounting international pressure and thousands of emails from Animals Australia supporters brings dolphins one step closer to protection from Japan's mass annual dolphin slaughter.

We have wonderful news to share with you! After being inundated by emails from thousands of Animals Australia supporters and pressure from around the world, the Shire of Broome held an emergency meeting and decided to suspend its sister-city relationship with the Japanese dolphin-killing town Taiji.

The move by Broome sends a strong message to Japan that the international community strongly opposes the slaughter of 23,000 dolphins in Japan each year. But unfortunately it does not mean that Japan will immediately cease the dolphin kill. Therefore the fight for the dolphins is not over yet and there are a few other important things you can do to help them.

Your Help Is Needed!

  1. Please send a thank you message to the Shire of Broom Council for their important decision: shire@broome.wa.gov.au
  2. Please also take a moment to write to the Ambassador of Japan to Australia and express your outrage at Japan's annual mass slaughter of dolphins.

    Ambassador of Japan to Australia

Here are a few suggested points for your letter to the Ambassador of Japan. Please put any you choose to use in your own words:

    • The slaughter of thousands of dolphins in Japan each year is barbaric.
    • These practices can't be justified by calling it a tradition or culture.
    • Japan could improve its international reputation and attractiveness to tourists enormously by stopping this brutal slaughter.
    • Let the Ambassador know that you will not consider visiting Japan whilst the dolphin slaughter continues
  3. Sign a petition demanding that the World Association for Zoos and Aquariums withdraws its support of dolphin drives hunts.
  4. Spread awareness by encouraging friends and family to see The Cove when it is released in Australian cinemas in late August.
