On April 5th the WA Parliament voted on a motion that could have legally prohibited the use of sow stalls in WA beyond 2017. Despite significant support, the motion was not passed. 12 MPs voted in favour of the motion, 17 against.
This failure of the WA Government to protect the welfare of mother pigs further demonstrates that hope for these animals rests squarely in the hands of informed consumers.
Our thanks go to the hundreds of concerned people who wrote to the WA government at short notice to encourage a vote in favour of mother pigs. Though this motion was defeated in parliament, the public groundswell against factory farming continues to rise.
Growing consumer pressure has already led to major decisions by supermarket giant Coles and an industry-wide voluntary phase out of sow stalls by the Australian pork industry.
