Wool factory farm to close down

15 December 2011 Have your say

A major wool factory farm in Victoria has announced plans to cease business as a producer of ultra-fine wool.

On 13th December 2011, The Wool Factory announced that "ultra-fine wool isn't viable anymore" and that it would instead make the transition to an eWaste business by June 2012.

Ultra-fine wool is usually from sheep confined in sheds — some in single barren pens — and is destined for high-end fashion houses. Investigations conducted at The Wool Factory by Animals Australia revealed the suffering caused by the severe and ongoing confinement of the sheep at the facility:

The welcome phase out of ultra-fine wool production by The Wool Factory may also reflect a broader decline in popularity and value of ultra-fine wool in Australia — particularly from sheep in small single pens.

In 2009, in response to pressure from Animals Australia supporters, Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna chose to exclude wool sourced from sheep kept in single pens from their prestigious "Golden Fleece" award — an award that had previously been won by sheep at The Wool Factory.

In 2010, the largest buyer of ultra-fine wool, Italian designer Loro Piana, pledged not to source wool from sheep who were kept in single pens, and also banned the cruelly-produced fleeces from their Wool World Record Challenge Cup awards.

Within the Australian ultra-fine wool industry, The Wool Factory was considered a flagship producer. However, it is reported that there are still many thousands of sheep confined in other wool factory farms in Australia — mostly in Victoria. They still need your voice. Lyn is a guardian angel but it is up to us all to speak out for all living creatures,to stop exploiting them and consider alternative meals to eat, other products to wear and dont be afraid to be ridiculed because you speak the truth.
Leisa Preen: Future plight for Spike and Spot?!? Wednesday, 1 February 2012 at 7:55am
Thank you Hazel for your kind words of encouragement  for us all.Refering back to your message -  'from tiny acorns grow big trees' of course  meaning us!!  - our strength and endurance for hope, faith and courage to help all  creatures on this planet   Tiny acorns grow into very large strong and powerful trees!!!!!  I live on a river and late last night, while sitting down there on my favourite rock  in the wind and rain I felt 'FREEDOM'. I watched as seagulls swooped and my heart cried  for all living creatures which are existing in all sorts of torment.   My thoughts drifted to the plight of Spike and Spot, they of course are possibly destined to the plight  of becoming circus animals.  It looks like Darling Downs Zoo might be selling them to some circus!!!  I phoned Taronga Zoo and it was explained why they can't do anything to help (like taking them)!!!    What to do!!!   Something has to be done with the media to let the public 'know'. These poor small lion cubs (just another sad  'story' of how  we humans are treating  another species on this our beautiful planet)  Thank you everyone - all of you who care.   Sometimes it can feel like a lonely journey and then I think of all of you!!!

Leisa Preen: We will prevail Sunday, 22 January 2012 at 10:06am
We, who care - will prevail.  To become bitter or apathetic though is of no use to all these beautiful animals.  These creatures who cannot speak for themselves or change situations to better their conditions wherever they are.  We can however slowly change this situation  completely by vote power, financial support to  AA and simply by gently spreading "the word' to all .    I believe  that in the future  there will be  such a change - we must have hope.  Let's all be a true voice  for all these sentient creatures  they have the same right to share our beautiful world.  I'm glad I'm not alone  though - thank you everyone - all of you!!!Leisa.

Factory farming is like a greedy blood sucking parasite to all kinds of animals. It needs to be exterminated, not only in Australia but World wide. Animals need to be farmed with care.
Thanks for the good work! how can we call ourselves "humans". I do not think some of us do know what that word really means. All living things deserve to be treated kindly.. One cannot profit from mistreating animals on a long term bases

Jill Ryan: Stop The Cruelty Sunday, 8 January 2012 at 8:49am
All animal cruelty has to be stopped.Whether it is live export, puppy farms, fine wool farming, battery farms,non-stun slaughter, whaling and the list goes on [in my opinion, the list is way too long now].Why do people think they have the right to treat all animals like rubbish?I`d like to gather all the people together who treat animals like that and do unto them as they have done to the animals.

Judith: Just an idea ??? Friday, 6 January 2012 at 11:19am
Hello everyone,

Like you all I just love and admire lyn white so much and I've never ever met her but feel like I have. She is amazing and I'm sure very humbled by all our accolades to her which she so richly deserves, there is a place in heaven for her and people like all of us who care about animal welfare I'm sure.

I was thinking that wouldn't it be great if all 974 of us so far who have posted a comment to lyn and the wonderful AA team here could send in $25.00 each that would be $24,350 dollars to AA just like that. Just an idea that I thought would be so wonderful to help get 2012 off to a great start for AA and all of us who care about all the animals.

I'm now heading off to post my $25.00 cheque to AA.

God bless you all

Thankyou lyn white and AA looking forward to hearing lyn speak in Melbourne on the 24th feb 2012.

Laura of Adelaide: Batty Katter calls for Fruit Bat Cull!... Saturday, 7 January 2012 at 11:02am
That daft, HOSS-HATTED Queensland pollie, Bob Katter is at it again and has called yesterday (6/01/12) for Fruit Bats (Flying Foxes) to be culled due to their supposed ability to carry the Hendra virus, after another horse died of this virus near Townsville this week.  Thank goodness for the calmness of Debbie Dekker, the Qld Horse Council president who says that a cull could make it worse by stressing bats, causing them to excrete more bodily fluids....wish a SQUADRON OF FRUIT BATS would excrete as they fly over Bob Katter's HOSS-HAT and leave several dirty brown marks dribbling down him!!   :-)

Sally Jandric: ANIMAL CRUELTY Friday, 6 January 2012 at 2:45pm
We humans are the cruellest living creature on this planet, if god wanted us to wear wool he would have covered us with wool or fur.  If we take from these animals as we do we can at least do it cruelty free.   I don't understand people who are capable of so much cruelty to innocent animals

Janis Marrison: More to Being an Animal Lover Thursday, 5 January 2012 at 4:31pm
It's very easy for someone to call themselves an "animal lover" but they need to realise that there's more to it than just taking their dog for a walk, or patting their cat.  We all need to stand up and take a stand against the cruelty and inhumane treatment inflicted on all animals - domesticated or farmed.  We cannot continue to pretend these terrible conditions like wool farming, live export, and pig confinement don't exist just because we don't see it on a daily basis.  It does exist and will continue if people don't get out of their comfort zone and speak up.

Sheep producing wool or fine wool should be allowed to graze in paddocks and have the freedom to move around a decent sized paddock

The ultra fine wool industry locks sheep inside sheds for up to 5 years. Like any intensive animal industry, the behavioural and social needs of the sheep, intrinsic factors which provide quality of life, are completely ignored. Find out more...
