'Battery sheep' misery exposed on TV -- Watch it here

24 May 2011 Have your say

Most Australians are aware that sheep are subjected to the cruelty of live export and mulesing, but few knew that sheep are also the latest victims of factory farming.

Animals Australia provided video footage from one of these ‘ultra-fine’ wool sheep factory farms to 6.30 with George Negus (Channel 10). Their expose has now shown the public the miserable conditions these sheep endure:

Animals Australia first exposed the cruel conditions in which these sheep are kept in a 2004 investigation which documented sheep chewing on the wooden slats and strands of wire of their pens due to stress, frustration and boredom. The sheep are also provided with a low feed ration to ensure their wool remains ultra-fine and they will often be hungry.

The new (2011) footage shown on 6.30 with George Negus unfortunately reveals that these welfare problems continue.

Findings from a 2009 scientific study also confirm the ongoing welfare problems. The University of Melbourne study commissioned by the Wool Factory (near Horsham, Victoria) found that the majority of observed sheep displayed behaviours commonly perceived as ‘stereotypies’, abnormal behaviours such as head butting or nosing and chewing pen fixtures, pacing and pawing – indicative of a failure to cope with the conditions.

There are reported to be many thousands of sheep kept in this type of confinement in Australia — most in sheds in Victoria — despite other farmers being able to produce ultra-fine wool without such cruel confinement for their sheep.

Now that these sheep are given a voice on TV and the community is more aware of their plight, there is an opportunity to free 'ultra-fine wool sheep' from their tiny pens. Our campaign is already convincing fashion designers to stop using wool from single penned sheep and it is time now to call for the practice to be banned.

Please help us call on the Victorian Government to ban this cruel practice!

wish would be a world with out any humans at all . Left to the so called dumb animals, this planet would be a better place indeed .
Humans are a curse to all forms of life .If there is such a thing as god ,how could you get it so wrong ?.May the dear animals of this world have their peace and pass away with out any fear from
us  .I am truly ashamed of the human race ,we cant even get on with each other
james larkin: One Day Monday, 29 August 2011 at 12:08am
One day men will awaken to the horror they have created and realise just how much damage they have done. One day hopefully the idea of killing and eating other animals will be inconceivable to all people and we will share a spiritual link and understanding with all other creatures. Hop
val: Cruelty to Anaimals must STOP! Friday, 29 July 2011 at 11:40pm
Watched Lyn Whites video on Australian exported cattle to Indonesia! I have not slept properly since or had the need to eat red meat!  I was appalled that humans can do these atrocities to helpless aimals.  An eye for an eye is my motto!!  I sobbed my heart out when I watched this video and 1 month later still cry at the thought of it!  Now these Indonesians are responsible for trapping a tiger and leaving it in the trap for 7 days!  If you are hungry enough to trap, you should check your traps daily - its so barbaric, how can anyone do this anyway?  Factory sheep as well! This world is sick, I hate people!!!
Julie Young Port Hedland W.A.: Where can you start.... give money Tuesday, 7 June 2011 at 10:21am
This export trade of live animals has been in our face for over 22 years & it is only now after the excellent reporting & tremendous courage of Lyn Watkins Animas Australia that we are NOW admitting to what all Australians have known for many years.  Stop feeling guilty Australia & get on and donate big $ to have the experts fight for the animals & ourselves.  Save our god given creatures from this numifing cruelty. These georgeous animals feel stress, pain just as we do....  Get of your bottoms & fight.....
Laura: the animals Tuesday, 7 June 2011 at 1:59am
I just watched more stuff , not all, because I was getting really sick at those monsters,, these men try to hide behind their religion  and it won't wash with me ,,
and if they think that we need them  more than they need us ,, well, they're wrong ,, we don't need you,,
we lived well enough without you guys and we can still live without your help,, your help for what???
perhaps the world needs to go back in everything ,, when things seemed simpler then  , the Governments are selling out the australian country and is doing it under your feet and you don't even see it or care , until something like this shows up,,,
you australian people, you voted 'somewhat ' for her ,, you can also debench her from the top job just like she did with her counter part,, gee , why don't people see things coming????...
Laura: the sheeps , oh my,,,, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 at 1:39am
They can still keep their coats on when outside , so what's the problem with these farmers,,,  they should be locked up for awhile to with  nowhere to go and see how they feel,,, men are so thoughtless,, they never stop to really think long enough if it's a good practice or what ,, is there a better way or what,,?? why don't they stop and think about it and even ask around for better options ,, you have nothing to lose by looking around and don't be afraid to ask around ,,, just check around for better options mate ,, or you can't see far enough or something???? you have a brain , right???
Daisy: NOT FAIR Friday, 3 June 2011 at 2:16pm
all the animals in the world should not have to suffer because people have to eat their MEAT, it is just not fair
Luisa Cali: FOUR CORNERS SEGMENT Tuesday, 31 May 2011 at 3:24pm
I can honestly say I have never cried so much in my life after watching The Four Corners Video.

I found it very interesting that someone from the AUSTRALIAN Cattle Industry when asked the question - "why should animals suffer while the industry is ensuring things get right" and he had NO ANSWER to that.

This is not some experiment in a lab with medication - these beautiful creatures feel PAIN, SUFFERING, ANXIETY just like ANYONE in this world.

This cruelty has been going on for MANY MANY YEARS and sadly I know why - EVERYTHING HAS TO DO WITH $$$$$$$ - it sickens me to be an AUSTRALIAN seeing that NO ONE but the great animal protection societies such as RSPCA, Animals Australia etc seem to care.

I am prouder each day of being a Vegan and I have Animals Australia to thank for that.
Michelle: We must help the helpless Monday, 30 May 2011 at 10:53pm
I have just viewed with much distress the sad and very real cruelty that goes on every day in slaughterhouses.I wept out loud as I witnessed some of the most horrific images I have seen on the 4 corners segment.Bless all the beautiful animals who died and in so much stress and undeserving cruelty.Thankyou to Animals Aus. for giving us the chance to help make a difference.Lets do all we can.The Australian Meat Industry must be stopped.ox
Phillip Kuhne: battery kept animal`s. Monday, 30 May 2011 at 7:58pm
i do not , and never have agree`d with keeping animal`s in battery farm`s -------basically keeping them couped up in cages -or shed`s all their live`s is not the way WE would like to be, so why them?.
iT IS CRUEL AND SHOULD BE BANNED.
Jan Lowe: Ultra Cruel - horrible Monday, 30 May 2011 at 7:54pm
How dear farmers do another cruel thing to sheep.  An animal that gives everything to humans and yet we have thought up another way to hurt them - bugger the fine wool - use synthetic.
The more I see and hear of what humans are doing to animals it makes me cringe to be called human!  We are meant to be kind - and respect all creatures.  This is pathetic, horrible and so so cruel - to hell with the farmers.
Sara: Campaign Monday, 30 May 2011 at 5:11pm
I will do anything I can within reason !! to stop this cruelty .Imagine humans caged in a 1 -2 mtr cage its like being placed in a straight jacket in a padded room for a human the same for these poor animals .
I will be signing any petitions ! Give these animals their life back ,the country side is there for them !
Wilfred: Whats happening Friday, 27 May 2011 at 8:34pm
What is wrong with some people? whoever thinks its sane or ok to hurt animals are just sick fucks! How can people look into the eyes of an animal and think they dont feel? Animal cruelty makes me hate people...................................I have a dog and he has allways been treated with lots of love and kindness, and hes allways happy!!! No amimal deserves to have their lives fucked up by sick heartless greedy people!

Sharon: who sells this wool? Tuesday, 24 May 2011 at 11:35am
Do you have any information on what clothing brands or stores sell wool that comes from these battery farms? I would love to reach out to them calling for them to stop stocking these products.

Maree Pearson: It's INSANE! Monday, 23 May 2011 at 7:53pm
Look at the despair in her eyes....doesn't that say it all. If only  all humans could feel their pain and open their eyes to the truth!!! It really is time to stop the ignorance...Ugly, greedy humans that think the dollar will make them happy...makes me sick!
Lynn Reece: Live export Monday, 23 May 2011 at 7:07pm
I do not understand in this day and age that the live export is still allowed to happen - animals die- crushed together in holds - I wonder how humans ? would feel if this were done to them? Why the heck do we have to SLAUGHTER animals to eat meat anyway? Being a Vegetarian or Vegan is much healthier humans. STOP THE ABUSE OF ANIMALS NOW AND STOP THE BARBARIC ACT OF "LIVE" EXPORT.
Ozzie: what now? Monday, 23 May 2011 at 6:50pm
So,  what do we do now?  We have to keep the pressure on the government and the producers that prosper via animal abuse - write letters/attend protest if you live in that area..  We inform our friends, family, work mates, about factory farming.  We boycott these products, by what we eat, and wear ( clothes/cosmetics).
Sharon Saw: We need to step forward Monday, 23 May 2011 at 5:36pm
It's very sad that animals have to endure this for human's indulgences. H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is a strong advocate for compassion to animals and it is when we speak up like him, and put our words into action, that results will come.

So we start by making sure our purchases to do not encourage the sales of these animal products. Simple demand and supply. Cut the demand, and the supply will stop too. The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
Natasha: Mulesing not cruelty its a necessity Monday, 23 May 2011 at 3:53pm
I may or may not get a hammering for what im about to say, but Mulesing is not a cruelty issue. If any of you have lived in the country or lived on a farm, you would know its not cruel. Its a necessity to keep the sheep/lambs from being fly blown & dying an inhumane death by said fly blow.
if the sheeps/lambs tails arent taken off they trap feces underneath the tail which in turn attracts MASSES amounts of flys to the area, they end up eating the sheeps/lambs anus to the point it causes death if not treated quickly enough by a farmer.
Mulesing is no different to you circumcising your sons! but yet thousands of HUMANS do this still on a daily basis without anyone saying they are being "cruel"!!
Here is a question for you, would you prefer the animal go through a split second of pain or the (very high) possibilty of fly blow and dying in a paddock a slow & painfull death? i can tell you now, its not a pretty thing to see, and i for one am FOR mulesing. it saves lives!

The ultra fine wool industry locks sheep inside sheds for up to 5 years. Like any intensive animal industry, the behavioural and social needs of the sheep, intrinsic factors which provide quality of life, are completely ignored. Find out more...
