Live export: it’s a crime
against animals.

What our live export investigators witnessed around the world can only be described as animal welfare atrocities. With repeat offenders freely reoffending, and industry cover-ups keeping Government, farmers, and the Australian public in the dark ... the time for urgent action is NOW.

THE INVESTIGATION

In October 2014, Animals Australia deployed investigators in the largest coordinated live export investigation in history. The ‘Festival of Sacrifice’ is an international religious festival — but the cruelty that has come to be associated with it has nothing to do with religion. For decades, the live export industry has capitalised on this time of year when live animals are sold and ‘sacrificed’ en masse. And for decades, animals have suffered horrific consequences. Despite ‘tough Australian regulations’ put in place over two years ago, tragically, history is still repeating itself...

THE VIDEO EVIDENCE

When it comes to the question of whether live export regulations are working, the evidence speaks for itself. WARNING: While we have edited this footage to make it easier to watch, it does contain scenes which may be highly distressing to some viewers. Viewer discretion is strongly advised. VIEW THE EVIDENCE: CENSORED OR UNCUT

TRAGICALLY, ALL THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ACTED ON PAST EVIDENCE. INSTEAD, REPEAT OFFENDERS WERE GIVEN A GREEN LIGHT TO CONTINUE THEIR OPERATIONS DESPITE A HISTORY OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY...

CRIMINAL ACTIVITY
GETTING AWAY WITH IT

BREAKING THE LAW

Exporters are legally responsible for keeping Australian animals within approved supply chains. Dozens of complaints lodged with the Department of Agriculture over the past 18 months reveal animals being blatantly sold in breach of regulations. Despite dire repercussions for animals and evidence revealing repeat offenders, charges are yet to be laid against a single export company.

THREATS & VIOLENCE

INTIMIDATION

In Jordan, investigators documenting illegal sheep sales in roadside markets have reported that one company was offering locals four live sheep in exchange for beating up anyone with a camera.

NOTORIOUS MARKET

ILLICIT SALES

Australian sheep continue to be illegally sold from and slaughtered at a notorious livestock market in Kuwait despite five legal complaints and additional conditions being placed on exporters.

ENDEMIC CRUELTY

OUT OF CONTROL

Malaysia, Mauritius, Jordan, Kuwait, Indonesia, Israel, Gaza, Egypt — everywhere we've looked laws are being broken whether it be illegal sales, cruel methods of restraint, or brutal street slaughter — Australian animals are suffering the horrendous consequences.

COVER-UPS
‘FINGERPRINTS’ WIPED CLEAN

DESTROYING THE EVIDENCE

The Australian government has an abundance of evidence that ear tags are being removed from sheep and cattle being illegally sold and slaughtered in Jordan, Kuwait and Gaza — to prevent identification of the exporter. Akin to a burglar wiping away their fingerprints to avoid detection, nothing has been done to curb this destruction of evidence.

A ‘BENCHMARK’

DECEPTION

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has a history of covering up for the live export industry and misleading producers, politicians and the public about the reality for animals exported live. In Egypt 2004, MLA said Bassateen abattoir set a ‘benchmark’ for animal welfare despite eye stabbing and tendon slashing of cattle being standard practice at this notorious facility.

‘STATE-OF-THE-ART’

FALSE CLAIMS

The live export industry publicly hailed their new abattoir in Egypt as ‘first-class’ and ‘state-of-the-art’. Only when the horrors inside this slaughterhouse were exposed in 2012 did they admit practices were in fact ‘horrific’ and ‘unconscionable’ with cattle being stabbed, slashed and butchered while still alive.

LEFT TO SUFFER

DECEPTION

MLA’s failure in 2014 to tell the government that hundreds of Australian sheep were being illegally sold through a livestock market in Kuwait not only facilitated a cover-up for the live export industry but prevented urgent action being taken for the animals at risk.

‘GENERALLY GOOD’

COMPLICIT IN CRUELTY

MLA installed 103 brutal slaughter boxes across Indonesia. Despite MLA’s complicity in facilitating this cruel method of roping slaughter — which shocked the Australian public and has now been banned by the Australian government — a 2010 MLA/LiveCorp funded report had concluded that the welfare of cattle exported to Indonesia was ‘generally good’.

IT’S ‘PHENOMENAL’

DECEPTION

MLA consultants were based at an approved abattoir in Kuwait during the 2014 Festival of Sacrifice which evidence shows was not complying with Australian regulations. Outside, cars lined up for hours with sheep confined in boots in high heat … yet MLA told ABC radio that welfare improvements during this festival were ‘phenomenal’.

NO PLEASURE CRUISE

FALSE CLAIMS

Industry claims of a high standard of care for animals on ships were quashed by a live export vet who exposed the horrendous conditions for animals during long haul voyages, including cattle unable to stand, suffering debilitating injuries and deprived of water during extreme heat.

DEATHS AT SEA

DECEPTION

The same exporter under investigation for breaking the rules in multiple countries was also implicated in failing to report for a week the deaths of more than 4,000 sheep who perished from heat-stress on a live export voyage to the Middle East in 2013.

NOT FIT FOR CONSUMPTION

FALSE CLAIMS

Defenders of live export insist they are providing ‘safe protein’ to the world but the truth is many overseas abattoirs that slaughter Australian animals would fail basic hygiene audits.

CORRUPTION
CRUEL DECEPTION

FORGERY

When 20,000 Australian sheep were rejected by Bahrain for disease fears, an export company official allegedly falsified documents to get them into Pakistan. When Pakistani authorities discovered the deception, the animals were clubbed, stabbed and buried alive in muddy trenches. The official faces criminal prosecution.

TRUCKED TO CRUELTY

TRAFFICKING

Trucked from Israel into Gaza illegally, thousands of Australian cattle have been left totally exposed to extreme cruelty. In Lebanon, another country where the sale of Australian animals is illegal — hundreds of Australian sheep were found hidden away in an abandoned car park.

VETS BULLIED

INTIMIDATION

Veterinarians have reported pressure from exporters during voyages to downplay the number of animals who die on board. One case ended up in court, with a vet accusing the exporter of doctoring his mortality figures. This same exporter admitted to covering up deaths on voyages to Saudi Arabia.

DOESN’T ADD UP

FALSIFYING DOCUMENTS

All export companies must provide the Department of Agriculture with reconciliation documents to show every animal is accounted for. But the fact that widespread breaches are recurring in multiple markets and are only being detected by Animals Australia shows that false reconciliations are being submitted.

Don’t let the Australian Government remain complicit in crimes against animals.

TAKE ACTION NOW

TAKE ACTION FOR ANIMALS

Cruelty, cover-ups, corruption. Whichever way you look at it, live export is a crime against animals.

‘Tough Australian regulations’ mean very little when animals are still being beaten, stabbed, and brutalised. They mean even less when those responsible for cruelty are permitted to reoffend without sanction.

If live export regulations cannot stop animal welfare atrocities from continuing, the answer is simple: the live export trade must end.

Don’t let the suffering of these animals be in vain. Use this form to send an instant message on their behalf today.
