“What is animal cruelty?”
A curious young supporter wrote to us, and the innocence of her question was heartbreaking. How do you begin to tell a child of the injustices that our fellow species face? That governments give some animals legal protection from cruelty but not others — despite them all sharing the ability to suffer?
“People sometimes do terrible things to animals,” was the beginning of our gentle answer.
Legislative change for animals is hard fought and hard won. But we don’t need to wait to make this world a safer, better place for animals. Choosing to leave a bequest to Animals Australia in your will means you’re helping to create a world where animals are valued for who they are, not what they produce. A world where what is ethical matters more than what is profitable.
Together we’re coming closer to the day when children ask us about animal cruelty, and our answer is simply, “It’s something that used to happen.”
Society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.Greek proverb
