Tell Woolworths to Dump Cruel Suppliers!

Tell Woolworths to Dump Cruel Suppliers! Two major Woolworth's suppliers in Tasmania have been charged with serious counts of animal cruelty. Please urge Woolies to dump these cruel farmers now!

In recent weeks two Woolworths suppliers have fronted courts in Tasmanian charged with animal cruelty.

Sun Valley poultry, a battery hen operator, was found to have hens confined in cages on top of the rotting carcasses of their cage mates during a government inspection. As a result Glen Peter Balke of Sun Valley Poultry was charged and convicted of ‘doing an act which caused pain to an animal’ and 'failing to provide veterinary treatment to a sick and injured animal’ and received a $3,000 fine.

One of Australia’s worst cases of commercial animal cruelty was remanded to June 30th 2009 in the Scottsdale Court in Tasmania. Gary Oliver, a commercial piggery operator of Winnaleah, has been charged with serious breaches of the Tasmanian Animal Welfare Act, included aggravated cruelty, after police were called to the piggery on March 3rd 2009. (Update: Mr Oliver was convicted on 11th August and was fined $2000, with his company being fined a further $10,000)

Desperately sick and injured pigs were discovered at Longerong piggery with no attempt made to provide them with veterinary assistance. Footage of a moribund pig with thousands of maggots crawling out of a wound has shocked even the most experienced animal advocates.

Woolworths have suggested that they intend to continue to purchase from the Longerong piggery due to their 'long-standing relationship', and that they have now visited the premises and are convinced that conditions have improved. Eggs from Sun Valley Poultry are also still available on shelves in Woolworths supermarkets.

Take Action!

If you believe like we do that Woolworths should not provide financial support and reward anyone capable of such cruelty and neglect, please leave a comment via their website or call them on 1300 767 969.

And remember that the best way to vote for an end to factory farming is to refuse to purchase these cruelly-produced items.
