A meeting of the Environment Protection and Heritage Council held in April 2008, failed to reach a national agreement for Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea on banning single use plastic carrier bags. The Federal and State Environment Ministers involved had already made a commitment to phase out plastic bags by the end of the year, but opinions differed at the gathering on how to achieve a consistent policy.
