Possums spared from horror slaughterhouse

LAST UPDATED: 15 July 2015

After Animals Australia and colleague groups revealed that the Tasmanian Government planned to allow the trapping, transport and slaughter of possums for the export market, the office of the Minister for Environment was inundated with protest letters calling for the plan to be rejected. Over 1,700 letters came from Animals Australia supporters alone!

Lenah Game Meats, the Tasmanian slaughterhouse that would have killed the possums, has previously been exposed for cruelty. The footage from that slaughterhouse of terrified, bloodied possums being chased by workers across the killing floor meant we needed to do everything possible to ensure this could never happen again.

Having been made aware of the clear community concern, federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke has now rejected the cruellest components of the export plan. Thank you to everyone who brought this to the attention of his office.

Although Tasmania's possums are now saved from the distressing transport and slaughterhouse process, the remainder of the commercial export plan has been given the green light, using animals that have been shot and killed in the field. This means there are still obvious and serious welfare concerns and the totally unnecessary and unethical exploitation of these wonderful native animals for profit.

As Animals Australia continues to represent our native animals in all available negotiations with the Government, you can also play a part by ensuring you never purchase fur products, of not only native wildlife, but any animals.
