Shocking cruelty uncovered in industry ‘approved’ slaughterhouse

Animals Australia investigators recently returned from Egypt. The evidence they gathered is damning, showing Australian cattle being subjected to brutal treatment in the country's only two accredited abattoirs.

Animals Australia investigators travelled to Egypt in April 2013 after being contacted by an Egyptian veterinarian who was concerned about the cruel practices at both the Ain Sokhna and Ismailia abattoirs. Last week Animals Australia provided the Department of Agriculture with footage and eye witness testimony chronicling a horror story of routine abuse of Australian animals at both of these facilities - the only two in Egypt approved to take Australian animals.

As a result, Australia's live export industry — which has consistently lauded these facilities as being state-of-the-art — is in damage control, announcing a voluntary suspension of the live trade to Egypt.

Brutal treatment of cattle and sheep was first exposed by Animals Australia in 2006. Further animals should never have been supplied to a country where cruelty to animals is routine and considered acceptable.

The outcomes from this investigation will be revealed TONIGHT (Monday 6th May) on ABC's 7:30. Updates will be provided on this website.
