Australian sheep sold and killed outside 'approved supply chains'

In dusty roadside stalls right across Jordan, Australian sheep stand waiting in the oppressive heat. One by one they will be picked off, some stuffed into car boots, and taken to be brutally slaughtered. They were never even meant to be there.

Our investigators documented evidence of more than 600 Australian sheep being illegally sold through dozens of roadside sellers in Jordan. Exporter Livestock Shipping Services, was again implicated.

This is the fourth extensive legal complaint Animals Australia has lodged with the Department of Agriculture about widespread and recurring live export breaches in Jordan. This time, another exporter — Wellard — was also implicated.

We told the Department about the disregard for live export regulations in Jordan in June 2013, in October 2013 and in January 2014. Without Animals Australia investigating, the government wouldn't even know these breaches were occurring. Evidence from this investigation shows that additional conditions placed on export permits have been ignored.

And all the while, night after night, Australian cattle face horrific abuse in Gaza — yet another export market in which LSS faced investigation for breaches. We lodged our seventh complaint with the Department about brutal slaughter in Gaza's abattoirs, again implicating LSS.

Live export regulations cannot protect animals if the government fails to monitor and enforce them and take action against a repeat offender. Even industry bodies are starting to question this startling lack of effective action.
