A COUNCIL committee has backed reinstating a ban on circus animals performing on city-controlled properties.

The motion put forward by committee chair Bob La Castra was passed five votes to one with Surfers Paradise councillor Gary Baildon the only opposed.

Those in favour were Cr La Castra, Cr Kristyn Boulton, Cr Cameron Caldwell, Cr Daphne McDonald and Cr Pauline Young.

Cr La Castra said the outcome of today’s meeting gave him confidence that a ban would be supported in full council but says he will come prepared for a heated debate on Thursday.

The committee as considering a petition put forward in March by then-Robina Cr Jan Grew in the final act of her political career.
