If you, for whatever reason, needed to see the receipts of vegetarianism's meteoric rise, look no further than this.
In an Australian first, supermarket conglomerate Woolworths has today launched a 100% vegan, meat-free mince.
Minced, by vegan food innovators Funky Fields, supposedly has the same structure, taste and cooking method of real meat. Made from select natural ingredients, it contains soya and wheat protein, beetroot, mushrooms, tomato and coconut oil. It looks like the real deal, too.
"If u want the taste of meat wouldn't you just eat the real thing?", we hear naysayers spittle, cheeseburger juice dripping down their chins.
There are a few reasons for choosing a meat-free mince.
First of all, it's better for the environment. The ethically-sourced ingredients cause significantly less carbon dioxide emissions than traditional meat manufacturing, in turn helping to prevent climate change.
Health-wise, it packs the same amount of protein (18%) as beef mince, meaning it'll fill you up for longer. The product's fat content is just 10%, which is measly compared to beef mince (30%). Aaaaand, it's mostly made of vegetables and you can never have enough of those.
We haven't tried it yet, but apparently it works a charm in your classic meat-requiring recipes like lasagne, bolognese, chilli con carne and burgers. Here's a vidya of all the ways you can cook with it if you're busy procrastinating and/or planning dinner at work rn: Funky Fields - Minced 100% Vegan!
